Panaracer Tour guards pressure
« on: August 16, 2014, 12:20:42 PM »
If you are running these what pressure are you using, unladen. I'm experimenting a little and although the max presure is 4.5bar I find the 'bobble' at around 3.5bar more than effective. If anything I could probably take .5bar out and still feel comfortable. Any takers?  Alternative tyre suggestions welcome too!

This is interesting, I looked up the max pressures in the Nomad brochure (Issue 30) for 1.75 width and found 61 psi front and 68 psi rear.

Those numbers looked different to me than my recollection, so I looked up the numbers in the Nomad brochure (issue 20) and there the 1.75 inch width is listed with a max pressure at 50 psi front and 58 psi rear.

Apparently these pressures have changed over time.  I thought that they were absurdly low when first published, now more reasonable.  I think I was running about 85 psi in my rear 1.50" width Marathon (plain version, with greenguard) on my Sherpa, Salsa Gordo rims when I did the Glacier Waterton loop.

These pressures are intended to prevent rim failures, not specific to brand and model of tire.

If you do the search yourself, do a word search for pressure, that finds it in the brochure quickly.

My calculations: http://interdependentscience.blogspot.com/2013/06/bicycle-tire-pressure.html

would suggest in the vicinity of 35 psi for 47 mm wide tires, assuming bike plus rider weigh around 200 pounds.

For 40 mm tires, more like 45 psi should be good.

I just got a Schwalbe pressure gauge and the info that came with that suggests 50 psi for 47 mm and 55 psi for 40 mm.

I think the main message here is that these tires can work decently across a very wide range of pressures. It's worth exploring that range!
