What is the difference between front and rear v-brakes ? Two part numbers, why?

Hi all,

I'm doing my shopping and was wondering why there are two references for v-brakes. For example, BRT780F and BRT780R for front and rear Shimano Deore XT BR-T780 V Brake. So it is more for bike culture than a real problem.

Is it because people who put them straight on the bike don't get that you may have to invert pads to fit front spec on rear (or rear spec on front)??

I suspect so, Etienne! I've not seen anything particularly different between the two except for pad/pad holder orientation. By placement behind the fork blades, my Nomad uses two "rear" brakes.

There are some exceptions, however. For example, the Scott/Pedersen self-energizing cantilevers used om some of my bikes have distinct "front" and "rear" models; otherwise, the helix responsible for the self-energizing action would be the wrong way 'round.

Dan is part right.
Some brakes like old XTR Brakes had shorter arms on the rear brake for less power at the rear!

Why? Because 70% of your braking power is the front brake so it needs to be more powerful.

Hi the Best are still XT V-Brakes!

I have some Paul Brakes and Do not like them! How seating in a Box to Bin one Day! But look nice! just do not work as well as XT Brakes..

Hi,

I am buying a 2nd hand Raven with Shimano LX brakes. The front brake is behind the front forks.
I also want to put on some Rigida CSS rims and understand these need Swiss stop blocks.
Can I :-
a)    Fit replacement Swiss blocks to the existing brakes
b)    Fit replacement cartridge and Swiss block to the brake
c)    None of the above but use Koolstop instead
d)    Do I have to scrap the LX brakes and buy XT brakes

FWIW I've owned a brand new Raven before using LX brakes and Mavic ceramic rims and Koolstop brakes.
Absolutely no problem with them and fantastic braking capability.
Your enlightenment would be appreciated
