Rohloff Oil
« on: March 01, 2014, 10:07:05 PM »
While in the process of rebuilding my Raven Twin I'm taking the opportunity to carryout an oil change.

I'm using a complete kit that came with the bike when I picked it up secondhand last summer. Now the thing that I'm not sure about is the colour of the new oil, it is the same black colour as the old stuff I drained out. I suspect that there is no problem, after all why should the previous owner give me a container of old oil? However I'd certainly feel happier about continuing the service once I'm certain that there is no problem with the oil I have.

BTW, I've ground to a bit of a standstill with the tandem rebuild as I seem to have lost one of the stepped flutes used for the cables when SS couplings are required. Once my next delivery from SJS arrives I'll be able to finish fitting the Rohloff cables, rack and rear mudguard and then she's done.

Hi Joe!

Yes that's completely normal for the oil to be a dark colour, carry on with the service without a worry.

Wait on there! This is in the little 25ml bottles? The cleaning oil is clear, the Rohloff hub oil is the colour of pale honey.

The little 25ml bottles are bluish and may discolour it when looking through the plastic, but you can easily check the actual oil. Mine is only black after it has been removed at oil change time. Alarm bells are ringing.

Thanks for the advice folks. I think I'd better order a new bottle of Rohloff oil.

Joe,

I can assure you that it's perfectly normal to have a dark oil from new.

They also have supplied oil in honey colour from new, depending on which batch you've ended up with.

Thats how mine was.

Makes me really wonder what kind of oil it really is.
Will have to take it to a oil distributor to get tested.
