Really interesting, Iain!
Perhaps weather is so interesting to cyclists because we're often out in it! I know it has always fascinated me. Where I tour, I am often away from weather broadcasts, so I've made an effort to do what I can to predict it in the short term. Noticing things like where the wind is blowing from, the kinds of clouds in the sky, and how low the wind is blowing helps. When the grass starts to ripple here'bouts, rain will typically follow in about 20 minutes.
I'm really interested in those barometric pressures...wow. As for the previous storm with high winds...were you camping out in it? On one of my more recent tours, the winds apparently reached 70mph on an exposed cliff-top where I was. I had no idea at the time, but checked the WeatherUnderground records for the area upon my return. It felt plenty strong in my little one-man tent.
Man, you guys have surely had the weather recently. A friend sent me a link showing news footage of the storm damage in Dorset. Really hit hard, with hip-deep flooding, trees down, the whole lot.
Merry Christmas everyone, hope you all come through happy and safe, fingers crossed the power stays on. ;-)
Me too! Stay safe, everyone!
All the best,
Dan.
