Hi Jags

I would imagine the rear spacing of the two hubs will be different 130 for the ultegra and 135 for the xt but you could always get the frame spacing redone if you wanted to if it is on a steel framed bike. I am not sure about the spoke lengths being the same but I would be very tempted to build up with new spokes rather than reusing the old even if they were the same.

thanks andy, yeah was kinda thinking i would need new spokes but to be honest the funds are rock bottom. i do have a 140 euro voucher in the local bike shop who btw has my wheel over a month now and is fogging me off with something i dont want so i cancelled the work, >:( >:( i'll tackle it myself if i can get a new hub to suit.
i dont know of anyone that would do a job on the frame for a wider hub.problems problems.

thanks Andy.

Sheldon Brown gives a good tutorial on widening frame spacing and to be honest it is not a difficult job as long as you take it slow and easy. The xt hub would give you a better hub seal but this would only really be of advantage if you are riding the bike in lots of wet dirty conditions. What is the problem you have with the current setup and what are you wanting to achieve with the new set up?

Andy the inside of the  hub is damaged  so i just need to replace it.i'm not stuck for a new wheel i have a set i bought from wiggle but the mavic xp33 are better wheels and they match my Raleigh.
ill take a look at sheldon brown advice but to be honest it willl only be a look i don't think i would chance tampering with the frame. :-\

I would either stick with the ultegra or if cost is tight I would consider a 105 hub. I have always considered the 105 to be excellent value for money. Looking on ebay you will be looking at around 90ukp for an ultegra hub and about half that for a 105.

Here are some refurbished ultegra hubs that may be of interest:
