OrangeBikeRide: UK to Port Elizabeth, SA -- on a Sherpa
« on: July 06, 2013, 07:31:54 AM »
Hi All!

I came across Joshua Rothery's OrangeBikeRide some time ago, and still think it worth sharing.

Englishman Joshua suspended his BA Honors photography studies for two years, intending to ride around the world with his cameras. He made it to the tip of Africa.

What makes his journey interesting is he rode a Thorn Sherpa. It was painted orange, all his gear was orange, and he loved to photograph the bike against orange backdrops. His bike's name? "William of" -- of course!

What a clever idea and way of showing his journey's progress. I had an all-black Sherpa and now an all-black Nomad and would have thought it easier to get matching backgrounds for those, but he has surprised me and proven it is likely much easier to find orange instead!

His last blog entry for 29 March 2012 (days 413-415 of his journey) had him in Port Elizabeth, South Africa, about 770km East of Capetown and facing the Indian Ocean. Apparently, he is back to being a student: "After finishing the cycling and not the blog of a long bike ride i am back to finishing the unfinished studies." Looking at his post-tour activities, he may even have graduated to work as an independent photographer.

In any case, an interesting read for those who like Sherpas and cycle-touring:

Thanks for posting that - I enjoyed reading it all and particularly liked the photography.

A great read and what a guy!

Nice to have a theme to a tour. And orange is as good as any. Wonder if Orange gave him a phone?

My own tour will be tiltled ...
Behind bars again.
(Handle bars of course folks)
But perhaps my pictures could include actual bars I pass?

Matt

Sure could, Matt! And...you could expand the theme to include "barred" things of all sorts --

• Bar codes (UPC)
• Zebra-striped pedestrian street crossings
• Security bars on doors and windows
• Vertical supports on hand railings
• Shadow patterns of trees on pavement
• (Some) nation's flags
• Striped jerseys

I suppose the list could go on. The thing is, "riding to a theme" opens one's eyes to the surroundings and you begin to see a bit differently, noticing things that would otherwise pass by without note. There's lots of possibilities that are Thorn-related, for example, or colors, flags, or animals. A teller at my bank used to collect frog-themed items (probably still does, but she's retired now) and could find them -- or photos of them -- in the most amazing places. I never gave it a thought till I saw her collection.

Lots of cyclists (and more than a few motorcyclists) carry Stuffos (small stuffed animals) as ride mascots. There's a photo in the Nomad brochure ( http://www.sjscycles.com/thornpdf/ThornRavenNomadBroHiRes.pdf . pg. 3) of Thorn designer Andy Blance with one on his handlebars; people have spun blog and travel themes around such things, be they toy soldiers, Stuffos, or small garden gnomes.

Or key off your bike's name. In 1960, the late American author John Steinbeck traveled around the country with his standard poodle and ended up writing a book on the experience named Travels with Charley, named after the dog. When I traveled round trip through 17 states to a year-long position in Oxford, Mississippi, I named my travel journals, "Travels with Sparky" after Steinbeck's effort. "Sparky" was my 1985 Honda Civic, named along the way by a petrol station attendant who reminded me the car needed a name: "Name it, and it'll never turn on you". He may well have been right, as the car never truly let me down. It is the same with bikes, which reminds me I must name the Nomad something better than "The Nomad". Andy and Fiona's bikes are named Hector and Bertha and have been known to enjoy grand adventures with their human friends. Joshua Rothery did it with "William of".

So, Matt, let your imagination run wild. Give "Matt's Old Bird" a flight of fancy, and see what you can dream up. I'm guessing it will be at least as good as an orange-themed bike and trip that has kept us all entertained!

Best,

Dan.

Unless your family, not grasping that you suffer from a delusion of breaking free shared by too many cyclists to incarcerate, first call for the men in white coats to come take you away in a nice white rear-lacing "cycling jacket", in which case you can send us a photo of the bars from the inside.

Super find, that Orange tour, Danneaux. The Garden Route from Port Elizabeth to Cape Town in safer times was one of the great drives of the world. I grew up in the desert just over the mountain that runs beside the Route, and we had beach houses at Knysna and Hartenbos and even lived for a while at George when my father bought a house there on a mad impulse (it rains there all the time).

PS Matt, I have a friend whose claim to fame (he's otherwise a three-piece suit, a director of a brewery) is that at Cambridge he was arrested for being "drunk in charge of a bicycle".
