berthoud rohloff shifter
« on: April 14, 2013, 07:52:02 AM »
Greetings from Colorado, USA
I'm hoping that someone here might be able to either share information or shed light upon how one goes about installing the cables on the berthoud rohloff shifter.  As you may know, the only instructions that are readily available is from the instruction pdf, written in French, and there is, for me, a cryptic diagram how to install the cable at the shifter, but if you are new to Rohloff and Giles Berthound, how to do this job is rather uncertain.  Reading others' posts, it sounds you get one go around fitting your cables.  If you make a mistake, you will need new cables.  Thanks to anyone who can help a silver haired newbie.

Hi Sube!

Welcome to the Forum!

I'm sure one or more of our members can advise you firsthand with some tips on cabling the Berhoud shifter (Triaesthete has one if I recall correctly). In the meantime, the following resources might help:

• Installation instructions, which are likely the same as you have: http://www.sjscycles.com/Instructions/Gilles_Berthoud/Gilles_Berthoud_Twister_For_Rohloff_Hubs_Instructions.pdf A note in English on the instructions says the cables assemble the same way as on the original Rohloff shifter. The process looks to be even quicker than cabling a Rohloff shifter: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WKc06Kvd0f4 The Rohloff video should give you an idea how the cables wrap from opposite directions (Cable 1 and Cable 14). The Berthoud cable runs are exposed to the elements. The cable ends go into the recesses in opposite directions, then wrap around and exit via the upper and lower ferrules. Each cable end appears to be held in place with a small grub screw.

The caution about a single-shot at installing the cables applies to the small grub screws that secure the cables at the hub end. You will be able to cable the shifter and check it for proper push-pull operation without having to anchor the cables at the hub end. Remember, the indexing is in the hub and not the shifter; the shifter should rotate freely (when you tug on each cable) to check on proper cable placement, seating, and operation.

Here are some additional resources that might prove helpful:
• CTC Forum topic on installation: http://forum.ctc.org.uk/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=68636&sid=1f286cb1d76baf85ed9bb79efd3ddb2b&start=15
• Installing the Berthoud shifter (this Forum), wrt cable type: http://www.thorncycles.co.uk/forums/index.php?topic=4355.0
• Installation photo essay on Flickr: http://www.flickr.com/photos/andychurch/sets/72157629968016116/
• Same photo essay with annotation on Fluidr: http://www.fluidr.com/photos/andychurch/sets/72157629968016116
• I just called a friend, who confirmed cable changes are very easy and do not require the shifter be disassembled.

Hope this helps!

Best,

Dan

Hi Sube

Dan never forgets. Cable installation is simple:

Rotate shifter so wee threaded hole in cable channel is above the cable exit. Drop cable in hole. Seat nipple in hole. Fit retaining grubscrew in on top. Repeat.

Don't forget to fit the exit ferrules and run outer cables through any frame cable guides before you start following Rohloff's instruction at the other end.

The caution re single chance cable installation refers to external gear mech hubs only. If you have the internal gear mech hub it is much simpler.

Make sure you consider the front brake cable exit path through the shifter wrt bar bag mounts etc before you set outer shifting cable length.

Happy shifting
Ian

Ian and Dan, thanks fellows.  I am waiting for the temperature in my garage to warm up after several late winter storms, and another on the way, but I think your advice will get me on the way.  I can't wait to give the Rohloff a go.  Thanks again! :)

You're welcome; best of luck, Gene! I hope Springlike weather finds you quickly.

If you run into any trouble cabling the shifter, give a shout and we'll do our best to help.

Hey Dan,
Greetings and thanks,
Actually, I do have the external gear box.  Never installed one of those before either.  So what is the special caution in regard to the external gear box?  Thanks

Hi Gene!

The primary caution is to make sure of your cable placement in/around the pulley of the external gearbox before tightening down the grub screws as the pressure of the grub screws can deform the cable, making it difficult to re-use the cable if one gets it wrong the first time.

As Rohloff's directions show, you need to cut the cables longer (total 200mm past the housing with the cable heads firmly bedded in their stops) than with the internal shifter.

Also, Rohloff recommend owners periodically lubricate the interface between the External Shift ("click") box and the shifting shaft. Since I often tour in America's Great Basin where I encounter talc-fine alkali dust, I decided to take things a step beyond Rohloff's specific recommendations and pump my External Clickbox full of Phil Wood grease to prevent internal corrosion. Time will tell if this was a good choice.

I also chose to apply anti-seize to the countersunk machine screws that hold the cover on the shiftbox, since this can be a point of corrosion. As suggested by Dave (expr), LocTite can also be used to prevent galvanic corrosion between the bright-zinc plated screws and the External click-box's aluminum cover and threads. Left dry, corrosion has been known to form around the threads, making future removal difficult or impossible.

A final caution with the External shift-box is to shift to Gear #1 or Gear #14 before removing the shiftbox and rear wheel. This simply eases reattachment, requiring only a little wiggle of the shift knob as you ease the shiftbox back in place and tighten the screw. If the shifter and box/shaft come out of registration, it is easy to fix -- simply turn the hub shaft fully one way or another using an 8mm box wrench, turn the shifter to match, and all will couple-up fine once again.

Hi Dan,
I really appreciate the help you have given me.  I'm marginally mechanical so I'm sure all of your advice will be so much help.  Thanks again.
