Tortec fron rack help
« on: May 10, 2013, 07:00:55 pm »

Hi everyone,

Had a tortec expedition front rack delivered today and have been trying to fit it to my thorn raven

I seem to have the issue that quick release is in the way of the higher two holes. The lower hole means the screw wont go in the mid blade bosses.

Anyone with this combo able to offer some advice? No doubt I am missing something obvious as is often the case.

many thanks if anyone can help its been a real head scratcher.

Hi John!

I'm not certain this will help in your case, but...

Have you tried fitting the rack with the quick-release removed from the front hub? (i.e. remove q/r, fit rack, replace q/r).

I don't own a Tortec rack myself, but mounted one for a friend and it surely helped to have the q/r out of the way during the fitting process.

Looking at your photo over at the CTC forum, I think you might possibly also need a small spacer so the rack clears the side of the fork blade. A little hard to say as photos and perspective sometimes foreshorten apparent distances.

Hope this helps!

Best,

Dan.

Hmm.

John, in looking at your Tortec-to-Raven fitment photo once again ( http://postimg.org/image/5a6eda7k1/ ), I fear you may be out of luck. It is a bit hard to confirm from the angle the photo's taken, but it appears the lower rack mounting bracket will indeed foul the dropout if not the hub quick-release when using the upper of the two rack holes on Thorn's lowest fork boss.

Clearances look a bit too tight to rotate the upper mounting disc downward to fit the upper boss and still allow the bottom hole in the lower mount to capture the lower fork boss.

The fitment I did was to a fork with the mounting eye as part of the dropout, rather than sitting a bit higher and separate, as on your Raven.

I wouldn't bend an alu rack, and if it doesn't fit the bosses I feel a bit pessimistic for your chances. Have you given Thorn a call to ask if they have any suggestions?

Best,

Dan.
