Just cut this quote from forum on a vintage touring bike:

To me I would say that it is quite an accurate observation and makes me wonder what of the current crop of "salvaged parts" from other disciplines you think could be improved to be better fit for purpose for touring?

My vote would go to the head torch, bought my first one for mountaineering and continue to find uses for it, or it's Nth replacement.
I'm assuming you meant other disciplines in the wider sense ;-)

Well, canoe paddles work really well to hold up the centre of a tarp--my tarps even have stuff-sacs with reinforced bottoms to accept a paddle blade, so's not to damage the tarp!--but paddles don't "translate" so well to bikes...
