Uhh, which one, jags? I'm guessing it would be blue, but dunno which of the lot caught your eye. Can you tell us more?

I do know Argos did a wonderful job building two bikes for the late Ian Hibell, then repainting and restoring at least one of them, based on the photos I've seen online. Looks like they'd do a nice job on your Sherpa.

Looking forward to seeing the results if you go ahead with it, jags. There aren't too many custom-painted Thorns out there, and I'm sure yours will look very nice.

noel hasn't even taken it out of the box yet so i gave up on that idea.
i phoned the guy that sprayed my raleigh but i think he is long retired .got an answering machine

The time you can spend on choosing paint colours is amazing.

I am planning on getting my old Nomad redone in November and deciding on colour (do I stay with black or is it time for a change?) Due to the fact that I am pretty hard on my frames (strapping things to them) I am planning on going down the powdercoat route.

I am lucky that my uncle owns a big powder coating company in the UK so I will get to go in there and do most of the work myself.

The bike on the Argos site with the bronze/black coating has been done with powdercoating. My last bike I had done was done like that and the coating lasted for 10+ years until the bike was stolen!!! It was an old Gazelle Champion Mondial in 531c which was a joy to ride.

For the first time though I am having to get a dent filled before coating. I have been looking into Quiksteel which seems to be up to the job (and the tmperatures 260C)

Will post some before and after photos when I get it done

Hi Andy!

Best of luck on your  Nomad restoration project; please keep us advised as it progresses. Photos are always good!

I've used QuickSteel and was very pleased with the results. Of course, its suitability varies with the application, but I found it worked surprisingly well at filling grooves in drum brake backing plates and any number of less common uses. It is heat-tolerant up to 260°C/500°F, so you should be fine with the powdercoating temps. If all you need is a cosmetic fill of the dent, it should work well, as it remains pretty stable dimensionally after curing. I found about 1% shrinkage with normal curing, up to 3% with heat-curing, so I'd suggest applying it and allowing it to cure at room temps.

If not a re-do with black, do you have an idea which way you might be leaning for color? That bronze and black would make a nice, durable finish if you decide to give your re-do a redux.

so andy give me a bit more info please,
the paintwork on my sherpa is in pristine condition as new as the man said,
but a change is as good as a rest .
did you see the paris frame i want to get my sherpa looking like 
would your uncle powdercoat it exactly the same .
just on powdercoating does the frame have to be stripped back to bare metal

anway Andy any more info on your uncles place would be great and prices .

Hi Jags

When it comes to getting your bike redone painting allows you much more choice of finish especially if you want the frame in more than one colour.

The advantage with powder coating is that the finish is much more durable.

The standard operation is to remove all the paint back to the bare metal as powdercoating uses a charged frame to ensure an even coating of the powder before it is baked.

My uncles company uses a mixture of acid dip followed by bead blasting (less abrasive than sand) to fully clean up the frame before coating.

They specialise in refurbishing alloys so bike frames is not their bread and butter.

I am planning on a two day operation - day one stripping, dipping and blasting followed by taking the frame home to do the filling work and masking off and then get it coated on day two.

I am considering either staying with black or go for a titanium silver frame with black fork. (Bring the bike into the 21st centuary lol)

Have bought new racks and bottle cages in silver so either colour choice should look good.

I will know more once I have done the Nomad. It is 20 years since I had my gazelle done so cant remember the specifics.

The company is based in Leeds and is called MSS is you want to have a look at what they do.

Cheers Andy your silver and black sounds class, but i'm a magpie love to mix and match colours and blue and white is a great combination especally on bike's IMHO high gloss for easy cleaning.emm i can almost taste it 
but yeah i dont want my frame blasted back to bare metal  just a light sanding and a guy thats  good with a spray gun will do me fine.
