Eliminating a click standing up.
« on: September 14, 2012, 10:32:26 AM »
Nothing worse than a click or a creak to diagnose.

Developed click on Thorn Raven Tour. Standing up, right pedal only. No click on left pedal.
I've seen so many causes of this.

1. Not saddle. Standing only.
2. Changed Pedal. No.
3. Tested spokes. All fine.
4. Changed rear skewer (I've had that cause a creak). No.
5. Re-seated chainset with grease. No.
6. Eccentric adjusters appeared tight, but tightened them a little each.
End of click!!

The most annoying one I had, on a tour, was a creaky click. I even brought it to a bikeshop which removed everything inc BB and greased. Didn't fix it.
EVENTUALLY when I'd checked everything I traced it down to a slightly overtight rear skewer. On my RT the cam works on a plastic thingy and this was creaking..

Loose chainring bolts for me. I spent a lot of time and energy farting around with the eccentric before the penny dropped.

Chain out of phase for me. It came off as I let it get too loose on very bumpy roads.   (I run 40*16) It was more than just a click though. More a grating sound. New chain sorted it. Could have put chain back on in phase for same effect

In the 1990's I ran a Peugeot mountainbike that was probably made in the 80s (I got it at a huge discount because it was too expensive for the local market, and had stood in the importer's showroom for years). It had the last of the French-made French components before that bunch of companies became SRAM.

I soon learn that creaks, wherever they seemed to come from, stopped when the crank bolts and pedal axles were tightened. If that didn't fix it, it was always worth taking the cranks off and tightening the bottom bracket because that always fixed the irritating noise. About three months later the creaking would start again.

One thing that was odd about the drivetrain was that the chainrings were oval, to enhance chain pickup I was told. Seemed logical to me, but didn't make derailleurs any more palatable in practice.

I didn't mourn when all those makers went the way of the dodo. I still don't buy SRAM components because of that legacy; probably unfair on the new owners, but there are a lot of perfectly good components in the world.
