GPS Waymarked routes through Europe
« on: May 23, 2012, 10:52:34 PM »
Hi All!

If you're planning a trip through Europe, but aren't sure where to go or how to get there, here is a link to GPS waymarked trail suitable for cyclists:

http://cycling.lonvia.de/en/

The interface is a little nonstandard, but clear once you use it. There's two ways:

1) Using the zoom bar on the left side of the screen, zoom out to get an overview of the routes they have GPS tracks for, then in on your preferred destination. Once you know which route you want, click on 'routes' on the right side of the screen to download the GPS track you want.
...or...
2) Go right to the "Routes" box in the lower-right corner and pull up the routes you want. Many are linked to Wikipedia for more information. Click on them, and the map route is highlighted. Once downloaded, you can "explore" the routes on your GPS of online using GoogleMaps or GoogleEarth (after converting to KVM format, if necessary).
...or...
3) You can also use the 'search' box at the bottom left to locate a particular route, if you already know the name. For example, "fietspad" for Flemish Belgium or The Netherlands, or "route verte" for Wallonian Belgium or France.

The UK is included as well, though most Irish routes are mapped for Northern Ireland with one exception west and a little north of Galway.

It is a pretty neat little tool for route planning, made moreso by the nice zoomable map overlays; I wish I had thought of it!

Best,

Dan.
