Rohloff eXp?
« on: February 25, 2011, 06:54:30 PM »
I am a newer member to the forum - and this may have been covered already.  Are the eXp (&R) bicycles still being sold by Thorn\SJSC?  I am the proud owner of a Thorn Raven Tour (2nd hand) that I use for my commuter - but I aspire to an eXp for an epic ride I would like to do in 10 years time (when early retirement can be taken).
Thanks in advance.

Welcome BB.

As far as I understand it, the exp bikes were handmade in Bridgewater by Kevin Sayles, a framebuilder who used to work for the legendary Woodrup in Leeds (and is now to be found there again!).  Basically Thorn found last year that demand for the bespoke bikes had reduced (probably as a result of the general economic situation I would guess) to a point where it was no longer economical to have a full time builder employed.  Kevin has therefore left and gone back to Woodrup last I heard.

Therefore, I believe that only off the shelf frames are now available new, although a few exp bikes and frames seem to have surfaced on SJSC's ebay shop, perhaps they were cancelled orders or being sold on behalf of customers.

However, as the leaflets say, the off the shelf bikes are still fantastic bikes in their own right, and I for one struggle to see the benefit of spending an extra grand on a bespoke frame!

Bb,
I had my Rohloff eXp stolen last Summer, just after Kevin was laid off. There were no new custom bikes being made and not much left in stock.

I was just in time to get an ex display eXp R frame made up with my choice of goodies. There was still at that time an unpainted 560L eXp frame available, but it would have been ready too late (after Summer) so I went for the eXp R.

I suggest you contact SJSC to see if they have your size lurking in a backroom somewhere, you never know...

I took a long time deciding to buy a custom bike, but it was a once in a lifetime thing for me. Luckily the insurance paid enough to cover a replacement. You could always look at a Nomad Mk2 for that epic tour.
Julian.

I've got bespoke spokes...that's about it   ;)

Are you really researching the bike you're going to use in ten years time?! I don't know what I'm doing next week! If you dream of doing a big ride, do it soon, that'd be my advice. There's always a way. A lot can happen in ten years.
