Heebie Chainguard for Thorn Nomad MK 2
« on: February 24, 2011, 12:31:24 PM »
Hello! I would like to get a chainguard for my Nomad MK2 and Heebie seems to make a nice product that has sorted out their previous issues with cutting into the Rolhoff Hub.

They don't make one for my 40T/17T ring - Perhaps Thorn and other owners who have a similar configuration can put in the word expressing interest in one? My 1 vote is likely not to count at this - Their contact page is http://www.hebie.de/Contact.11.0.html?&L=1

A small oversight on my custom build.

So far I love my Mk2 - I haven't ridden it more than 200km as there is a tonne of snow, but it is certainly a step up fro my Long Haul Trucker. Looking forward to continuing RTW with it.

When I was sorting out the specifics of my recent Nomad order, I talked to the folks in Bridgwater about adding a chainglider to the build. The response I got back was that the chainglider doesn't really fit the Nomad's frame - "modification is required" to the chainglider.

I've got a 38/16 combination, which I think does match one of Hebie's offerings. If anybody can report on experience mounting that on a Nomad MkII, I would love to hear about it. My goal would be to reduce maintenance and increase the life of the chain & sprocket.

Here's some interesting discussion on the Hebie & potential problems:

There were a few threads on this issue on this forum in 2007 that discussed issues where the chainguard caused issues to the hub, yet the problems had been resolved come 2008. I will try to dig this up.

Thorn reversable chainrings are also too wide for the front of the Chainglider and can force the halves of the chainglider apart. I used a chainglider for a few months but part of it eventually got sucked between the chain and front chainring and the plastic was deformed beyond use. Very good idea but designed for the average shopping bike and not very Thorn friendly.
