Am I ....
« on: June 01, 2010, 02:32:12 pm »
getting old. I ask you this question because when my wife shortly retires her gift to me ( well I paid off the mortgage when I retired) is going to be a new bike.
My initial reaction was to take a look at those sexy Carbon Fibre jobs and I was salivating just looking at them.I thought I had settled on buying a Wilier Izourd but then doubts set in. I had decided on this bike because in one of its reviews the writer had mentioned how plush it rides and then I thought given that a comfortable ride was my main concern then perhaps I should be looking at getting a Tourer rather than a Racer.

As I already own a Roberts and a Bianchi and I  use the Roberts the most I have decided to plump on getting another Tourer. So in answer to my own question I suppose I am getting old.

My first reaction was to get a Roberts Roughstuff but then given it will be expensive I am also looking at all the alternatives IE Koga Myiata,Galaxy, Cheviot SE, Van Nicholas, Surly LH
and you all know of all the other models that come into this price range but now having once again looked at the World Sherpa I am considering this one again.

Given that before I am much older I want to cycle down to the Med could I ask everyone for their reasons for choosing a Sherpa rather than any other make. I know that all views expressed will be a little biased but I really would like to know what difference there is between this bike and its competitors.

All opinions will be greatly  received. Thanks

the only thing i don't like about my sherpa it's sluggish when it comes to hill's >:(as long as your prepaired to take it easy and remember your on a touring bike that weigh's a bit  ;)all will be rosy in the garden.
as for comfort it's brilliant ,i doubled the bartape on mine put a gel tape on first and over that i used fizik bartape very hard wearing, only last week a friend gave me a pair of 20 year old slicks( i kid you not in perfect nick )the difference is unbelivable i had only put on schwalble marathon supreams great tires but one of them split when i hit a stone on the road so a bit on the dodgy side for touring ;)
i put shimano xt m770 groopset on mine got sjs to build me a nice set of wheels .
so all in all the sherpa is a sweet bike strong as an old mule solid as a rock hang on hang on  and lighting quick on decents
but next time round i'm buying a paul villiers dream machine ;)
cheers

thanks for reply jags. yes I had already thought about how sluggish it would be  but to be honest it will  match me because I seem to have more cyclists pass me than I pass.
