Club Tour or Sherpa?
« on: May 03, 2010, 03:45:58 PM »
Not looking at long loaded tours (well not until the little one's a couple of years older) but I am looking at a comfortable 'do it all' bike.  So uses will be commuting 15 mile round trip, shopping, pulling a U+2 trailer bike to the park, day rides which are mixed country lanes and hill tracks.

I really liked how my Tricross SS felt for the mixed lanes and tracks rides so leaning towards the club tour with it's 700 wheels that could take 37mm tyres.

Currently running a Marin steel mtb frame with surly 1x1 forks and Panaracer 1.75" tyres and it's comfortable enough on road, but the Tricross was more comfortable off road.  I'm guessing the 1x1 fork is probably pretty unforgiving and the larger wheel of the Tricross rolled over stuff better.

I know I could run bigger more off road specific tyres, but that's a drag on road.

I'd be looking to get a f&f package and build up Club Tour or Sherpa as a replacement for it.  Obviously with the Sherpa it'd be easy to just do a parts swap, but getting some 700 wheels isn't such a big deal.

I'd really like to hear from folk that have used either or both for mixed utility, road and hill track riding.

Hello
I have both the Sherpa and a Club Tour. The Sherpa is a great comfortable strong bike suited to Camping trips and every day rides. The Club Tour is also suited as the Sherpa, but a little lighter handling and faster on the road. Which one would I keep if I could only have one you might ask?
The Sherpa.
John.

Hi Guys

John could I ask a question. Whats the Sherpa like at riding with no load for 60-70 mile day trips. Is it comfortable and do you find it generally heavy or only heavy uphill. Could you do a audax with it?

i would describe the sherpa as a workhorse ,it's a comfortable bike on long days but it 's slow when climbing imho.maybe that's because im not as fit as i once was ;D.great bike for loaded touring  but for credit card tours i would be looking at something a lot lighter faster .

No load day rides-Superb.
Uphill slightly slower than Club Tour.
Audax on any bike so Sherpa would be a comfortable but not fast ride.

i bought a new set of tyres for my sherpa  marathon supreams made a great difference to speed  brilliant on all surfaces  and wet roads ,i got sjs to make me a great set wheels sun rhyno  xt hubs  36 hole  cant remember the spokes type.but they done a fantastic job on the build.
only thing there a wee bit on the heavy side ,so might be worth considering getting a lighter set of wheels but go for the supreams tyres there brilliant. ;)
