Sold: Red Thorn Mercury Mk 3 Size 55L - £1,500 ONO
« on: March 12, 2022, 06:43:51 PM »
Now reduced to £1500.

The time has come for me to declare my red Mercury 55L as surplus to my requirements as I'm unlikely to ever use it to its full potentional (see http://thorncyclesforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=14396.0 for an explanation). It was bought as an ex-demonstrator in July 2020 and is featured on page 2 of the Thorn Touring Bike bible http://www.sjscycles.com/thornpdf/thorn_mega_brochure.pdf . Since purchase it has been pedalled nearly 8,000 miles including a supported LEJOG. Mechanically it has performed impeccably although I managed to break a nipple on the front wheel during the LEJOG (probably when I hit a nasty pothole which was lurking in the shadows) but this didn't stop me continuing on my way. The Rohloff hub has already had three oil changes and I'll do a further oil change before the bike goes to a new home. At nearly 8,000 miles it's getting bedded in.

The attached photos show the overall current condition of the bike and the original sales info is also attached. There are several paint scrapes but none have exposed bare metal and everything has been touched up to the best of my limited ability (one of these touch-ups is visible on the chain stay in the hub photo). I have removed my customisations and restored the bike to the configuration as received although I did cut down the Thorn handlebars to minimum width in search of comfort with those bars. The bike is currently shod with 48mm Panaracer GravelKing SKs (with tubes) which have clocked up about 2,500 miles. I've also added a pair of MKS Lambda pedals so the bike is ready to use and there are 3 bottle cages in almost matching red.

50mm Marathon Almotion tyres (about 2,500 miles) and G-One Speed tyres are also available if preferred.

The location is central southern England close to the M4 but I could arrange shipping at cost. More photos available on request.

It's still for sale and I've edited the original posts and lowered the price.

Price reduced to £1500. The bike hasn't been used since originally advertised but is taking up space in my garage.

How tall a rider would this suit?

See page 29 of the Touring Bike Bible http://www.sjscycles.com/thornpdf/thorn_mega_brochure.pdf which includes BFSO as well as height.

If you have another bike that you find to be comfortable then measure the distance between the bottom bracket and saddle top and between saddle nose and handlebar clamp and I'll compare them with the bike in current condition. There's scope to change the stem length and raise / lower the saddle to fine tune the position.
