Tyre choice

I've come to really like  my 2.4" rear  (Schwable Moto X ) & Surly 2.5" ET front .For me they are great for mixed terrain .But if you had a long ride of nothing but tarmac is it worth changing the tyres to 2" Duremes .

Definitely.
Or Marathon ones if you can source them.
UK based or States?

I think that Duremes may be hard to find (Marathon Supremes may be an alternative) but the principle of smoother and narrower tyres for better progress on tarmac applies. My Mercury came with tubeless 50mm G-One Speed tyres which were fairly fast and comfortable. Anything with Marathon in the name tends to give a relatively firm ride due to the puncture-resistant layer (which also adds weight).
