I have no interest in carbon.   My vintage Columbus tubing bike is heavier than carbon, but it still pretty light and handles great.  But, it is friction shifting on a six speed freewheel, so that is why I am building up another bike that was designed with the intention of long distance riding.

It's not a race 

Touring demands a bike that is comfortable to ride, and durable for the long haul. Roadies ride the bike till it breaks then toss it to the mechanics.

Long-distance touring in particular requires a robust and durable bike. Thorn makes excellent bikes that fit the bill.
