The Beast is upon me

I used Strava during my afternoon ride today. Just shy of 25 miles but...calories burnt amounted to 666!!!!!! That combined with the imminent arrival of a blood moon made me get back on the bike and do an extra couple of miles to take me over 25 miles and past the number of the beast. I'm working on the moon!  :)

666 cals over 25 miles! I'm not vastly experienced in these matters but that dose not seem a lot for distanced covered. I cycled 8 miles this afternoon for 522 cals, so my Edged Touring tells me. No cadence or heart rate monitoring involved. The math just dose not add up in4 ;)

I'm of the cool, non-perspiring persuasion too. According to Polar Beat on my iPhone, working with an H7 Bluetooth HRM, over a particularly hard 8.71km day before yesterday I burned 227 calories. That appears to be more in line with what the OP reports; normally I have difficulty burning more than about 200-220 calories on this particular ride.

I'd be very keen to go hard enough to burn 522 calories in 8 miles.

Of course, I'm not vouching for the accuracy of any of these devices or calculations; like Andy, I just don't know enough about them.

Interesting.  I've not given much thought to Strava's accuracy. I just enjoy riding. Perhaps I should look into matters further, there might be a surprise waiting!

Footnote: I'm not sure what I have started here but a few online calculators suggest that the number of calories burnt are double that Strava indicates. Some of the said calculators ask for age, weight, time, distance but not elevation climbed. Thus far the seemingly sole constant is me ie I repeatedly cover the same route with broadly similar statistics. That will just have to do.

Moving time: 2:02:59 hours
Distance: 24.9 miles
Avg speed: 12.2 mph
Elevation gain: 682 ft
Calories: 666

I do not use any calorie estimation methods or tools for exercise.  If I did, it might entice me to think that I should reward myself with some calorie laden sweets.

If the goal is to lose weight, reducing caloric intake is the best option.

A couple weeks ago at my health club they measured me as having 14.3 percent body fat, I want to get that down to 12 percent or less which is where I was about three years ago.

Thanks for the link, but I think I'll give it a miss as being likely to involve me in a major field of study without the likelihood of commensurate return. It is enough for me that my results, across several heart rate monitors, and monitoring systems, are pretty much of a muchness, and have been since I first wore monitors, as a teenage rugby player running up the hill behind Coetzenburg. I'm comfortable with thinking in that familiar envelope.
