Bad Weather Ahead
« on: December 08, 2014, 04:13:01 PM »
Yellow wind warnings (sulphurous?) up here in Shetland and warning of 40 foot swells off the Western Isles.  The local coucil are worried about the manhole covers blowing away so I have said that they can tie them down to my eXp.  That should hold then down.

Winter draws on...

Serious business on the oceans, it seems.  This is what Environment Canada says about the southern section of the BC coast for the next few days:

Summary

Rain, at times heavy, is expected. An incredible series of storms are set to cross the BC Coast this week. An intense jet stream over the Pacific is gathering very warm moist air from southern latitudes. A subtropically-influenced airstream will bombard the mountains of Vancouver Island and the Lower Mainland from today through Thursday morning. High rainfall rates and a prolonged period of rainy weather will create an extraordinary 3 to 4 day rain event. The first two storms will boost rainfall totals well above the warning criteria for a 24-hour period. Following systems will add to the week's rainfall and the initial warnings will likely be extended for successive 24-hour periods though mid-week. The inflooding warm air will drive the freezing level to nearly 2500 metres. In some areas, additional water from snow-melt will add more water to drainage basins, creeks, and rivers. The East Coast of Vancouver Island, the Sunshine Coast, Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley-West including Abbotsford, will receive between 25 and 100 millimetres of rain by Tuesday morning. And that is just the beginning...

Details

Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads. Watch for possible washouts near rivers, creeks and culverts. Environment Canada meteorologists will update alerts as required. Please monitor local media or Weatheradio.

Ron, David, hope that all's OK and that you can stay indoors for the worst of it.  Dan, it appears that this will pass north of you?  Good luck all on the northeastern coasts of Atlantic and the Pacific.  We're expecting snow in mid-week, but nothing like the precip heading for BC.

The pressure systems seem seriously messed up.

Yes, they are predicting 50mm of rain in my area tonight. But I don't mind it. My bike is set up to ride in the rain (good fenders, Rohloff -- no exposed gears, Chainglider -- no exposed chain), and I have good rain clothing. I had a fantastic ride to/from work about two weeks ago in the pouring rain. Unfortunately, I haven't ridden since then. We had a "cold" spell, where the temperature didn't go above freezing for almost a week. (I put "cold" in quotation marks so people who live in actual cold places -- such as Mr. Saxby -- won't laugh at me.) We had about 2cm of snow on the first night, then a lot of ice and frost as the temperature hovered around freezing for the rest of the week.

But with the rain comes warmer temperatures. It was 11C today, with a low tonight of 10C. I much prefer rain and warm (~10C) over clear and cold, having grown up in Vancouver.

The older I get, the more ready I am to experiment with something other than clear and cold.  In fact, we haven't had much "clear and cold" in the last few years, though when I first came to Ottawa 35 years ago, prolonged cold-sunny spells were fairly common. I was cycling in -8 weather a week-plus ago, but it was bitter, with heavy cloud and a serious damp easterly, no sun and no fun at all.

Friends have a cottage on the Québec side of the river, and their bay is frozen solid, perfect for skating as there's no snow at all on the ice. That'll only last a day or so longer, however -- we're due to get 25 cms by Thursday. Some people do ride in these conditions, but the combination of ice on the roads & the much narrower streets make cycling too risky for me. Snowshoeing & X-country skiing should be good this weekend.

John, I must say I've never seen a government weather bureau forecast use terms like "incredible" and "extraordinary" before! I've always thought government meteorologists were born without an expressiveness gene (at least the ones I listen to here are like that - personality-free zones  :D).

Our weather has been very changeable lately - here's a shot of our beach the other day. For most of the day prior to the storm rolling in, it was sunny and balmy 30C. It's been like this for a week - sunny days and stormy evenings. http://www.abc.net.au/news/2014-12-08/storm-clouds-at-merewether-beach/5952254

Hey Sammy --

I was hoping one of our Oz/NZ friends would chime in and talk about their summer!  Enjoy your weather.  I had a great ride to work this morning: 11C, driving rain, very windy. But I was dressed for it, and my bike is perfect for this weather. When you have the proper gear, it is fun (just like any other outdoor activity).

I've noticed that the Canadian government weather service has started issuing "weather alerts" with more frequency in the past couple of months. The alerts used to be reserved for serious warnings, such as very high winds or unusual snowfall. But now the warnings are for things like "heavy rain" (a normal occurrence here in Vancouver). Now it is true that we have had a lot of rain in the past month, and the ground is saturated. The river that I ride past on my commute was an absolute torrent today. I actually stopped to watch it for a bit. So I'm not sure if the increased warnings are because the weather is actually worse, or because the weather service is trying to justify their existence. Probably a little of both. As for using the adjective "incredible" and "extraordinary" in a weather warning, I don't know. This autumn has been very wet, perhaps wetter than normal, but "extraordinary"? I don't know.

p.s. Wow! What a picture of that beach. Fantastic lighting. It should be a poster hanging on my wall: "places to visit sometime".

Dave, I think that Environment Canada is trying to keep up with The Weather Channel, which reports on "weather events" with a near-apocalyptic glee.

Hi Dave,
Yes, Newcastle is a very cycle-friendly environment, even in winter, as is Vacouver! And yes, you should come for a visit!  :)

Here in Onslow, WA its a breezy 42C. That's near Karatha.

After too many years in Thunder Bay Canada having the -40C will take the heat any day.

I seriously wonder how you people deal with that cool weather
