To check if you have sent a message, go to the upper-left of your Message window and click on your Outbox. If you see no outgoing messages stored there, the problem is with your account setup.
What you need to do is select your profile (Profile tab under your screen avatar) and then in the box of options to the left, under "Modify Profile", choose "Personal Message Options". Be sure to tick the box for "Save a copy of each Personal Message in my outbox by default." While there, tick the box for "Show a popup when you receive new messages?" and for "Notify by email every time you receive a personal message:", set the option to "Always".
That should take care of the missing outbox messages so you'll know if you've messaged someone.
