Rohloff produces, and SJS stocks, a left-handed shifter.

Left-handed, shifting

I've developed an injury to my index finger on my right hand, which may take several weeks to resolve and make shifting rather problematic.

Has anyone tried swapping the Rholoff twist grip shifter to the left side of the handlebars so you can operate it with your left hand.

Apart from having to retrain my brain to get used to this and twist it in the opposite direction to shift
can you foresee any complications with doing this?

Thanks

Ewan

Here is my Nomad Mk3 size 540L with the Ortlieb Frame Pack in its 6L version. (link to bigger version of photo).

I got the Ortlieb bag because I wanted a roll-top bag. Frame bags with zippers are infamous for breaking.

As one can see, there is room left underneath the bag for mounting my pump.

I don’t use the triangle for water bottles. Instead, I find that feed bags are a superior solution for carrying water bottles. The Decathlon feed bag is cheap, but reliable for the long term, and it can fit even a Nalgene bottle.

Accessing water bottles

I have seen custom made frame bags designed to allow use of the two bottle cages in the centre triangle  but not on a Nomad. The size of bottles one could use  I imagine would be limited and the cages would need to be the side entry type.

The photo is a screen shot from the web,
I think it’s a Mk1 Raven (aka Rohloff) Nomad S&S frame.

At the following link there is a photo of Tara Weir’s hybrid classic tourer/bike packing setup on her Mk2 Nomad.

Of course, the geometry of the latest Mk 3 Nomsd is different to the earlier types so might give more options.

Great photos, thanks for sharing. Do you have a pair of panniers and one or two rack bags on your rear rack? TIA

Interesting to see as there might be a trade off re bottle cages and a frame bag. I’ve recently put a very small one on my Nomad ( just for a pump and tools) but I’m not convinced I can work with it yet. Accessing water bottles and the top tube ( for lifting) are my most immediate concern.

Rohloff Internal Hub Gears / Re: Rohloff: "Below the 1.9 Threshold"

With 38x21, my lowest gear is just under 13 inches.

That corresponds to about 5.5 kph at 90 rpm.

If I am very tired I may drop pedalling rate to 60 rpm, which is 3.7 kph, about my lower limit for keeping balance.

That works on the loaded bike. With no front panniers, the front wheel lifts on very steep climbs.

Exactly, this happens on my bike also. That plus the "keeping balance at slow speeds" issue mentioned by Mickeg means that below a certain gear ratio, there's no point reducing further. We just have to figure out what that point is for each of us.
Another 38/21 gear setup with the hub built into a 20" wheel for a sub 10" gear.
But I'm also on a recumbent trike so no real minimum speed for hill climbing as long as I keep traction and don't just wheel spin.
