Title: Axle ring groove
Post by: onrbikes on September 13, 2014, 09:10:51 am
Am in the process of replacing a set of seals and hub cable, and noticed one very small groove in the rub ring on the Axle ring. The fingernail can only just feel it.
This is on the axle side.

On page 115 of the manual it says if there are grooves (the photo shows 2 grooves from the seal) deep enough to feel with the fingernail, to send back to Rohloff for replacement.

Should I bother? That side of the hub never leaked any oil, it was always the cog side.

I have all the bits and replaced the seals and am about to reassemble.

I think you have what is described in the trade as an "oil seal witness mark".  Normal wear. If there are no sharp edges to cut the lip on the new seal it can go back together as is. If it's border line the crafty might try polishing....

Happy days

It should just be a rub mark, if you can catch your fingernail in it then post me the axle ring and I will pop a new one on for you.

Dave.

Thanks Dave

But I already installed the thing .

So far it seems OK. Will see when the real hot weather hits and gets the oil real warm.
