I'm going to be replacing my chainring as it's coming to the end of it's life (already been flipped) after a good 54,000km. My question is, how do I chose a new chainring? Are they all reversible? Should I just get one off SJS? Is there a cheaper, equally good alternative elsewhere?

After 54,000km, do you even need to ask? Whatever the SJS chainring costs, it's a bargain.
Probably be smart to replace your chain and sprocket at the same time, unless the sprocket is very little worn.

If you are ready for a change, a popular fitment on this forum is the Surly stainless steel chainring with the Hebie Chainglider. Who knows whether it will last longer than the SJS chainring? But the combo will be cleaner and require less maintenance.

Not all are reversible. Most chainrings are sold for doubles or triples, those usually have ramps and pins, etc. I paid about $11 USD for my cheap chainrings, but they are a soft metal and I would not expect to get half the distance you are getting.
