Title: Thorn Model Brochure *Historical Archive*
Post by: Danneaux on July 30, 2013, 05:38:59 am
Hi All!

It seems we all become curious about past Thorn models at one time or another, and it can sometimes be difficult to find the original archived brochures for research and reference.

Better, it seems, to have a "sticky" with links to the brochures for many models in one place -- here!

All are downloadable in .PDF format from the Internet Wayback Machine (Internet Web Archives) and are gleaned from past crawls by their spiders. I have included both the high- and low-resolution formats where available so users on slow connections or mobile devices can see them more quickly and at lower data-usage to save mobile bytes.

Please note: Though verified at the time of posting, links may go down from time to time. Either wait a bit and try again (may need to wait overnight) or PM me with the specific model and link if it is a persistent outage and I will try to supply an alternative link.

Please check back from time to time; I will try to update and fill the gaps to include at least one year of each model Thorn produced.

Enjoy!

All the best,

Dan.

DISCLAIMERS:
• Please note the dates; these are *not* current brochures, offerings, or prices, and all brochures and links are for archival and historical information purposes only.
• These brochures are not intended to replace Thorn's current brochures, available for download with latest descriptions and prices, here: http://www.thorncycles.co.uk/models.html

Interesting.

I still have an electronic text only copy of the original brochure of the Thorn Expedition 700c wheel touring bike  (Reynolds 531) that Thorn offered for sale in the mid '90s. I still have a frame also.

I recall reading somewhere that these were their first  branded touring frames and I think made by Argos, although I'm sure someone at Thorn could give accurate info on this.

After these, Thorn went on to build the very first Thorn Nomad series. 26" wheel touring bikes with horizontal top tubes.

Cheers

Hi All!

Here are some useful articles from the archived FAQs and Downloads of the Thorn Cycling website in years go by. Keeping in mind the dates, the basic information is still relevant and useful in many ways.

Best,

Dan.

That article on downhill braking is really nice. I have taken to wearing a floppy long sleeve shirt lately and it is amazing how steep a hill I can managing with almost no braking. I didn't see that as a deliberate tactic but I think it works. Trick #1 on a long hill is just to sit up as much as possible, to increase frontal area. Trick #2 is to unzip outer layer a bit, to get one's upper garment to act a bit like a parachute. Ha! I still have this fantasy of panniers that have built-in drag brakes, outer panels that open up at the front to capture air and slow one down. Some kind of cable control along the top tube perhaps.

Does anyone have an alternative link or the PDF file for the xTc? It seems the archive files are corrupted somehow, or this is what my browser and PDF readers tell me. Thanks.

Sorry, it did work now. Not sure what was wrong earlier.

Hi Philipp,

Thanks for the heads-up. This happens sometimes when I view the archived files as well. There is a tremendous amount of information stored there, and I will occasionally get a message saying the server hosting the file I want to view is down (for maintenance, I presume). It was a real challenge to assemble this brochure archive 'cos there were so many hiccups in accessing the data. I think this is the most reliable assemblage over the years Thorn's site has been crawled.

Hoping it stays up and intact for ready access going forward. If a file seems inaccessible, it usually helps to try accessing it again later; sometimes even waiting overnight helps.

Best,

Dan.

Brilliant work putting all those files up.

I can't open the Sherpa or xtc pdf. The xtc really was lovely. They should bring it back!

Many thanks for doing this Dan.

I was about to post a question about the history of the Thorn Audax as I was wondering why the frame I just bought was a Mark III, and right on cue you posted all of these links. I can now answer my own question!

That's lot of work you have done.

Much appreciated.

Hi,  alas I can't get any of these pdf files to open either in my browser or as a download (states they are 0kb file size).

Possibly a comparability issue with uptodate reader???

If anyone can help be much appreciated; wanted to look at Thorn Raven Sport info.

Thanks, Tim

Hi Tim!

The archive -- or sections of it -- goes down from time to time. Suggest you try again in a few hours or after a couple days have passed.

Best,

Dan.

Alternative server for RAVEN SPORT TOUR as of 31Dec2016: http://web.archive.org/web/20091229040217/http://www.sjscycles.com/thornpdf/ThornRavenSportTourBroHiRes.pdf

I would have added this edit to the initial entry, but the software limits post size and that is at the limit.

The Internet Wayback Machine's servers sometimes go down for extended periods. If you can't find a given brochure at the links I listed, check to see if you can download one from another snapshot date, as different snapshots are stored in different servers. When you find the reference you want, it is best to download the PDF to your desktop, as there's no telling when a given server will go offline and the reference can be unreachable for some time.

All the best,

Dan.

Thanks for this Dan, and for all the Forum work you have done in the background in 2016. You have guided a lot of people to the info they were looking for, as well as helping with often complex technical cycle issues.

Best wishes for 2017 to you, and to all members.

Thanks for collating all of this information, it's been a really useful resource.

Perhaps I've missed it, but has anyone posted a time series showing the different frames that Thorn have produced along with their approximate lifespans. I was also wondering if anyone had any information on the frame numbering schemes used on the bottom brackets and how this has changed (e.g. can this easily be used to date frame).

Cheers.

No, not yet.

Frame size is included in each serial, but beyond that, I don't know the numbering scheme. Perhaps Dave Whittle can help us out here. It would surely be useful in more closely dating frames.

Good questions!

Dan.

I've got the Nomad mk2 2013-2014 brochure (no. 30), file name ThornRavenNomadBroHiRes_2013.pdf in my archives. It's about 13 Mo.

I don't see anywhere to post that kind of document on the forum so I've sent you a link in a PM.
