Title: Thorn Sherpa Radio Interview
Post by: Vintagetourer on April 16, 2021, 05:54:22 am
A first in 40+ years of cycle touring.
This morning I was interviewed on Canberra Radio ABC 666 about my forthcoming tour from Canberra to Perth.
Nothing too extraordinary about that, but what was different was that my Thorn Sherpa, loaded and ready to depart on tour, was invited into the studio.
And it did really well with the interview.

Oh I shall have to find that online now. Although a Frequency of 666 is a bit concerning!

Their website says:
“In 1975 the 666 frequency was changed from 1540 kilocycles to 1440 kHz and then again in 1983 it was changed to 666 kHz where it has remained until today.”

Yes the Thorn Sherpa is loaded ready for a 4000km ride starting on Sunday.
I’ll fine tune the load tomorrow and might reduce the base-load slightly as I need space to carry 10-12 litres of water for some stretches of the ride.

My first ever cycle tour on a loaded bike took me into The Fens from London in early 1979. It was an amazing experience I’ve never forgotten.

Good on yer, Graham, and your Sherpa adds suitably colourful commentary, just standing still.

Not a lot of touring cyclists getting interviewed on radio, so good for you 'n' ABC.  Last year, as the pandemic was locking onto most of Canada, I heard a delightful interview on CBC with a musician from St John's, Newfoundland, who was touring Atlantic Canada with his guitar, strapped to his bike, giving live performances in all four Atlantic provinces. (Atlantic Canada had its own bubble at the time.)  The announcer said, "Just visit our website to see Buddy Wossisname and his bike."  So I did but I couldn't find the photo. (Buddy W, BTW, is Nfld slang for any fella, employed here 'cos I couldn't recall his name  :( )

Safe journey, mate, & keep hydrated!

Thanks John. My handy tip for radio interviews with a loaded touring bike.
Ensure the bike bell works properly.

During the interview, the show’s producer cued me to ring the bell. When I did, the only sound was a dull clunk because the brake cable was touching the bell.
Other than this slight hiccup, the interview went well.
The ABC interviewer, Lish Fejer, is an old friend and former work colleague. In her younger years Lish cycle toured across Europe funding her trip by taking on cooking jobs.
