My SON hub has been repaired under warranty , as a consequence I have ordered a new rim. Unfortunately CSS coated rims are no longer available and thus I need to use standard brake pads. Any recommendations for What standard pads I should purchase for my XTR V brakes? Thanks

For my money, it is Kool-Stop in the Salmon color.
Best,
Dan.

Thanks, I will check them out.

I use Kool-Stop Salmon in the XTR brakes on my Raven Sport Tour.
They have been "fit and forget" so far, but that bike has only done about 2,000 kms.

I like the Koolstop Salmon as well, but am just as happy with BBB Tristop, both stop well and are kind to rims.

I've got Kool Stop salmon fitted to the old tandem, and Swisstop Blue on my road bike ... both significantly better stopping power than the shimano pads originally fitted

+ another one for Kool-Stop Salmon. Best grip in the wet I have had from rim brakes, and they seem to produce very little rim wear.
The only down-side is that my impression is that they do not last as long as 'harsher' pads, but still fine for most applications and in their cartridge form, easy to replace (apart from that fiddly pin). An alternative, perhaps for a very long tour, might be Kool-Stop Dual Compound - last better, which might be helpful on a long tour, and also minimal rim weat, but wet grip not quite as good.

The other respondents to your question have a lot more e£perience that I do. But for what it’s worth I use these on the front XT V brakes of my Mk2 Nomad (rear disk). By instinct I always break rear before front and if the rear disk fades on steep downhill these on the front in concert seem to pick up the strain well. As I don’t use them on rear I don’t know how they’d perform under heavier braking use.
I would tend to concur with the reviewer’s remarks, here

PS just thought of a downside of having a Tonka Yellow frame - Salmon pink brake pads are a no no 🙁

:D Not so bad if you get the inserts to slide into the silver or black alu holders. Hides most of the sins. ;)
Best,
Dan.

I once heard of salmonyella, but it's prob best not to try it. ;)

Why so sad? I have them on my Raven Tour..
Wet riding is....... Such fun. And yes, I have tried a variety of pads in a selection of shades.
Matt is looking forward to replacing both hoops.

+1 KoolStop
No demand for CSS rims - they never wear out ;-) I have yet to change my blue rear pads after ~20,000km.
