News, gossip, fun or entertainment?

Mine comes from a German bike parts order that has disappeared from tracking after clearing the US Postal Service's International Service Center. Last word on it was 9 March, then...nothing. Tomorrow, I'll file a missing item trace from this end and notify the seller, who was kind enough to send it Registered Mail and hopefully insured it. If not, then PayPal should cover it.

Pins and needles here, I don't wait well for for delayed packages. ???

All the best,

Dan.

Danneaux'craic, part Deux:

My upcoming desert touring plans may have to change unless I include a paddle:
http://www.djbios.com/the-burning-man-playa-in-black-rock-city-is-currently-underwater/

I'd planned another lengthwise crossing of Black Rock and Alvord deserts, but...  :o ???

The alkali playa is challenging when dry but when wet it is really, really *bad*. Impassable pudding at best, but this is _wet_.

Best,

Dan.

Good news! The package arrived in the late afternoon mail today!  ;D

The bad news...it had been soaked to the point where the printed bar codes had run, making it impossible to track. Online tracking shows it still in New York. Fortunately, enough of the address was present for it to make the trip, albeit without having to sign for it. ???

Other bad news: I ordered two items but only received one. The package was pretty squished and looked as if it had been opened by Customs (but no note from them), so perhaps it fell out? Or was not included? The seller is a really nice person, so I'll contact them next. Probably just an oversight.  :-\

In other news, I'm converting the tandem from self-energizing cantilevers to v-brakes. I took a fall on wet leaves while riding it back from the coast. My hand was caught between pavement and brake lever on impact (ouch). I'd hoped this might have cushioned the brake lever; it did, but the lever body still fractured. An old Dia-Compe Aero Gran Compe AGC250, there's no replacements available, hence the changeover. Hoping this setup will require a bit less hand pressure on long descents where the Arai drum brake is already doing its best to help. 100kmh+ is fine fun until I need to haul things down quickly for a 40kmh corner.

Probably enough craic for now.

Best,

Dan.

I'm very fussy about who I work for.
I left the helium factory because I didn't like the tone of their voices.

A brilliant offer, Julian,  and many thanks. I think I can work out how to attach racks and panniers, but I'm baffled when it comes to fitting the dynohub, charger, and lighting, so I'll have to pass.  ::)

:D

All kidding aside, I now need to make some alternative routes. One will be to follow the track of the Ruby Pipeline, laid in 2010. It goes cross-country and largely avoids the dry-lake beds, so would be an Adventure of a different kind. No possibility of meeting others, so a nice sort of solitude in very rugged country.

What is it the car GPS units say? "Off-route. Recalculating...".  ;)

All the best,

Dan.

Week before last I cycled in khakis and shirtsleeves. Today I turned up the heating as the winter takes another bite. Ugh!

Persistent wet weather here in the Gold Coast Down Unda has cramped my style a bit. (I do understand I'll get no sympathy, so I'm just observing, not grumbling.)  Everything's damp, never dries -- just like Foggie Olde in the days before central heating. It's warmer, mind.

Have done some good rides up into the hills inland from the coast. The smell of eucalyptus forest at  few hundred metres of altitude is divine.  The 15%+ grades to get there, not so much -- but if you want the butterflies, you have to put up with the caterpillars, no?

Normal service is due to resume towards the end of this week, so I've planned a few more rides into the higher country. Will take my camera along & report back, I promise. Meantime, have attached a couple of teasers.
