All the things in the poster could come true for someone who takes up cycling. For this lifelong sceptic of advertising and PR, two BUTs have to be registered:

    > The benefits of cycling (not the same as its virtues) are listed/described as appeals to vanity.  Maybe that's a good way of selling cycling.  I'm not sure.  Most of the cyclists I know don't ride so they have better abs, whatever.  I'd prefer a message that's simpler and less vain: Cycling brings better health, fitness, and a sense of well-being.

    > There's a nagging, finger-wagging undertone (or is it overtone?) of "Do this because you should."  Better to state the obvious--Riding a bike is fun!--and let people reach their own conclusions.

Don't y' know? Cycling is a sport, or so we keep getting told. Not to me, it isn't. I don't currently have a car so the bike (whichever one is nearest in the garage ???) is my transport. It takes me (and my dog) down to the beach, it takes me shopping, it makes me feel good and is a green machine.

The road to contentment may be travelled only on two wheels.

Sorry I disagree.  A bike specifically required for shopping is an excellent excuse for getting yet another bike.  (Remember the N + 1 law)  :)

Actually, that should be written as "n+1".

The correct number of bikes to own is n+1.

"n" is the number of bikes currently owned. "n+1" means the correct number of bikes is always the number you own...plus the next one. Altogether, this is a wonderful way to justify adding yet another bike to the stable. After all, it is not just a formula, it is a Law.  ;)

Best,

Dan.

I have seen "the perfect number" phrased as S-1, S being the number at which your spouse leaves you...'course, it's kinda hard to know what the value of S may be beforehand, although the after-the-fact calculation is usually spot-on.

No worries, e-man!

A lot of my posts are made on my phone's keyboard with numb fingers, sometimes roadside and occasionally in very poor weather. When you see I've edited my posts, it is usually after I've gone back and looked in horror :o  at the typos I've made --  ??? -- and must correct!  ::)

All's good.  :)

All the best,

Dan.

i agree entirely. n+1 is a law. i want a fliz bike.
S-1 is interesting too. for owners of "classic" cars, the "s" value is always very low.
