Title: tyre advice
Post by: jags on November 26, 2016, 04:42:14 pm
These tyres look good but it says max load 70kg am i missing something here.
i weight a bit more than that plus 2 loaded panniers so would these tyres be useless .

I have Schwalbe One 28 mm on my lightweight derailleur bike. Light tyres that roll very well.

Wet grip is good. I don't usually ride my derailleur bike in bad weather, last weekend was an exception and I ended up riding 50 kms to get home during the storm on Saturday night (19/11), lots of wind and rain, plus the occasional fallen bit of tree to dodge.

Only done about 700 km on these tyres, so don't know how they do for durability and puncture resistance (none so far).

I've Schwalbe One 28mm tyres fitted on my Thorn Mercury. Generally I've found these to be excellent it terms rolling resistance and have not had any problems in wet weather. However after 600 miles the rear tyre developed a number of longitudinal splits along the centre of the tyre, the front tyre was OK. These varied in length from 5mm up to 80mm. The bike has only been used on tarmac roads, never used off road or on trails. The tyre was returned to Schwalbe who replaced it with 2 new One V Guard tyres. So we'll see how these go.

Correction: Replaced with a One not Pro One tyre.

Schwalbe sure have some range of tyres.how do they come up with all these different designs total mystery.
HMD first time i used the supreams i managed to slice a nice 4inch  gash in the sidewall i could not believe it CRC replaced it no problem ,but what an efford to get home 17 miles to my house  2 new tubes ripped, 4 or 5 punctures before i finally made it to my house.
have to say tho CRC are fantastic at returns they even  sent me a new tube.

The tyre was returned to Schwalbe who replaced it with 2 new One V Guard tyres. So we'll see how these go.

Looking on Schwalbe's site, I see they have made changes to the tread (and probably other things) since I bought my set of Schwalbe One tyres.

I have over 5000km on a set of Schwalbe Marathon Plus 26" x 1.75 and no punctures so far. Used across Europe this summer on all surfaces from silky smooth road to washed out rocky cycle paths and they handle it all well.

A bit more expensive than other makes but it looks like I will get another 5000km out of them so well worth the price. Many of the long distance tourers I met en route this summer had Marathon or Marathon Plus tyres.

Hello,
My experience tells me that Schwalbe on 26" are great but on 700c they are sluggish.

Jags,

I use Schwalbe Marathon Racers on my ti-framed Eclipse derailleur bike. (Light touring bike, now used for day rides since I have my Raven for touring.)

I use 700 x 35 Racers, and they are very nice indeed -- give a better ride than my 26 x 1.6 Marathon Supremes. The Racers are said to be 35mm wide, but inflated they are 32mm actual.

They are available in 30 mm, which I'd guess comes out at 28 actual -- but you'd need to check that.

In past years, I had good luck with Vittoria Randonneur Pro tires, 700 x 32, which were 29 actual.  Also a light tire with a very nice feel. (They're also about half the price of the Schwalbes.)  Because they're narrower inflated than their listed width, I'd suggest a 700 x30 if you go that route.

Hope that helps, and that it doesn't just complicate things further ;-)

Cheers,  John

Hello,
My experience tells me that Schwalbe on 26" are great but on 700c they are sluggish.
Regards,
John

I have tried 32 mm Supremes which are very comfortable, but as John says, sluggish.

I recently got a pair of Clement Strada LGG 120 tpi in 28 mm, initial impressions are excellent. I just wish they did these in amber wall.

Have you tried? I see no attempts at communications through Facebook on the SJS account, we have someone standing by most of the time.

Hi Anto,
I think you've just been  unfortunate in your timing with SJS, as when I was building the nomad I had to contact them on numerous occasions and was well pleased with their service. Deliveries were always quick, and always there to give advice.

How is the build going?  it sounds as though you're getting there
 Keep smiling mate ;D ;D
