Are you looking for any model in particular SON28, Julien? The Klassic (barrel-shape body) or the New (ball shape body)?

Best of luck; one just may appear laced into a wheel!

All the best,

Dan.

Hi Daniel !

Yes "Son 28 The Standard"
https://www.sjscycles.co.uk/dynamos/32-schmidt-son-28-dynamo-front-hub-black/

I think it is the most powerful at low speed...

Can i use it without rear light ? or maybe is it a problem for the front bulb ? ..

You shouldn't need a tail light. Some old head lights were designed to require a tail light, but that doesn't seem to be true anymore. I think it was Supernova that built those old systems. If you want to use an old Supernova headlight, like maybe five years old, then you should be check further.

Excluding the special types for 16" Brompton wheels, on the family bikes I have :

1 SONdelux
2 SON 28 Klassik
1 Shimano DH-3N80
3 Shimano DH-3N72

All work very well. I don't notice the (small) differences in efficiency between the different models.

For heavy use, I prefer the models with steel axles (SON 28 Klassik and Shimano DH-3N72), and use them with Allen-key skewers rather than quick release. The SON 28 "Der Standard" also has a steel axle.

The two dynohubs with aluminium alloy axles are now on bikes that are not used for carrying heavy loads.

Several years ago the SON was clearly superior to other hub dynamos. I am not sure that this is still the case, as the mid-range Shimano hub dynamos have been significantly improved.

I expect the SON hub dynamos should last longer, but probably not enough to justify the price difference in most cases. On the Rose bikes site the SON 28 is 210,76 Euros and the Shimano DH-3N72 is 59,50 euros.

Another possibility is the SP dynamos, these are between Shimano and SON in price, and seem to have good reviews.

This site has some interesting reviews of various hub dynamos:

Currently, i have a shimano deore hub and i don't know if my axle is in steel or aluminium ..

Can i use the same axle with my future dynohub ? or is it better to choose a specific model ?

Thanks!

The hollow axle stays with the hub. You should generally not try and dismantle axles on dynohubs, as it is easy to break the wiring.

The existing skewer (quick release or Allen key type) from the Deore hub can almost certainly be reused on the SON.

Hi,

I decided to sell them and use the money for other projects.  I don't cycle that much in the dark and because I seldom camp now I have no problem charging devices.
