Title: Hi All! Forum back up, but with some bugs
Post by: Danneaux on July 27, 2015, 05:35:03 pm
Hi All!

Dan here...the Forum has been back up for the last couple hours, but I am finding some bugs to pass along to Adrian, Thorn's IT man. He has been working hard this last while to bring the Forum back to us, for which we can all be grateful. Now we can help him by collecting any bugs. If you can't post them here as a reply or to me by PM, please email them to me at my username at (the people who are the BigName in searches and email) and I'll pass them along.

Admins have different permissions than general users, so your help is...helpful! I registered with a dummy account and found some problems. Here is a partial list so far...

• Avatars aren't displaying for member accounts. The solution should be:
Admin -> Forum -> Attachments and Avatars -> Avatar Settings?
Check there that the Avatars directory $ Avatars URL are correct.

• Non-admins (regular members) don't see the New Topic button...Membergroups permissions issue.

• New Topic button is missing...seems to be a permission issue. Membergroup permissions to start new topic.

• All past personal messages (PMs) are missing.

• New registration emails come from "My Community" not Thorn Cycles or Thorn Cycling Forum, sourced from (personal account) @sjscycles.

•  Forum start URL resolves to http:// cluster3172.extendcp.uk/thorncyclesforum.co.uk/index.php "cluster3172.extendcp" prepends all page requests.

• Tab name for Forum start page comes up as My Community (as with the welcoming email for new member registrations), not Thorn Cycling Forum.

All the best,

Also...

• Quote facility is missing for regular members (again...permissions)

• Yikes! We're being hit left and right by spam registrations...Tom's Outlet, a Dictionary spammer in the Belgian Congo, etc. Yes, we need the StopForumSpam filter mod in place.

Best,

Dan.

Hi Dan!

What good news -- I've been in a wee state of ThornCyclesForum Deprivation. Have compensated for it by changing the 38T 'ring on Osi to a 36, and installing a new chain for the new ring. Mini-road-test report to come, when the temps back off a bit: 32 forecast for today, with 100% humidity, if you can imagine :-(

Bug reports:

1)  PMs:  My back list of PMs (inbox) seems intact.

2)  As I worked through different threads (hadn't seen any since early July, bef I went on a mini-tour with Meg to Prince Edward County) it seemed that the "reply" button had gone missing...But after 5 minutes, it appeared. Hence this message.  I'll monitor this & let you know.

Thanks very much to Adrian, yourself, and others who have worked on the Forum site.  Looking forward to catching up.

Best,

John

PS as edit:  "Modify" seems to work fine, as well.

I just added an avatar to my profile and now I see that appearing. So the missing avatars seem to be because somehow the old avatars aren't hooked up. The new forum does seem ready and willing to display avatars.

Oo! I can now reply too!

I note that the site is still forgetting my login (making me log in each time), although it may already be fixed.

Dan, do you know if we'll get our old avatars and other stuff back?

Oh, and howdy everyone! I hope you enjoyed your break.  8) (Nice new emoticons, no?)

the site is still forgetting my login

I seem to have gotten timed out and needed to log back in again. No big deal of course but there is probably a bit somewhere that could get flipped...

Glad to see the forum back up and running.

Having the same issue with having to repeatedly log in. The problem for me occurs when I follow the link from the post in thorn general section to here.

All the best

Andy

While the forum was down, I used my time to strip down an old bike, repaint the frame and build it back up with a very odd mix of new and old components.

When I bought the bike (used) in the 1970s, it had a Campy rear hub date code of 1961 and a Brooks date code of 1962.  Had not ridden it for over a decade.  I had forgotten how much I hate downtube friction shifting.

Now I will find out if the old limit on how many electrons you can post in photos is still there or not.  Paint in the photos looks black but it is dark forest green.

I am actually quite unhappy with the paint.  It easily scratches off.  Used automotive primer, then on top of that some paint that I have had for a while.  But the primer did not bond to the steel very well.  Maybe you need special paints to get it to bond to Columbus?

I repainted it in the 1980s, same problem at that time too.  Automotive primer did not bond well.  This time I prepped the bare metal a little more careful, as a last stage I even wiped it down with a paper towel soaked in rubbing alcohol to try to clean any chemicals off of the metal.

I have been hesitant to take it to someone to paint it, I want the original paint on the headbadge to remain.  After this paint job gets beat up enough I might try to remove the headbadge, then have a professional paint it.  Then try to figure out how to re-rivet the headbadge back on.

Hi Dan --

Perhaps the Thorn logo at the top left of the page could link to the Thorn page (http://www.thorncycles.co.uk/ (http://www.thorncycles.co.uk/)), not to the main Thorn Forum page (http://thorncyclesforum.co.uk/index.php (http://thorncyclesforum.co.uk/index.php)). We can already get to the main Thorn Forum page by clicking on "Home" in the menu near the top of the page. I can't find any link back to the Thorn page, and the Thorn logo seems like an obvious place for such a link.

Thanks,
Dave

Dan,
The "new" button in the thread titles doesn't seem to work properly, seems to lead to the start of the thread rather than the first post since last read?

Hi All!

Many thanks for the continued bug reports; very helpful. Some of the problems should be resolving by today. If not, please continue to advise. The login issue seems to be resolved for both my admin and dummy regular account, but I'm not everyone.

Keep in mind, with the move to SMF v. 2.x, things will be in slightly different places and look a bit different than on the old v. 1.x. Sometimes, things are "hiding" in plain sight, having mastered the art of camouflage.  ;)

As for other issues, I would suggest cleaning your browser cookies and seeing if that helps in seeing updates.

In regard to a few other issues....

If you have an avatar that is not showing up, you'll need to upload a new one. The earliest ones remained through the move, but the newer ones did not make the trip. I need to update mine as well.

I wish the URL was back to the old thorncycles.co.uk/forums, but the server at the main site doesn't support php forums, so the Forum gets its own URL.

Adrian has been and is continuing to work hard on these issues; thanks, Adrian!

All the best,

Dan.

Hi Dan,
I'm glad the forum is back online, I was feeling withdrawal symptoms  ;).
I'm not sure if this is a bug or not but hopefully there is a work around.
I use my PC from an arm chair at a distance (I hate being up close to the monitor screen), when reading the forum I just increase the display size (Ctrl+), the text used to rejig so that all the script was on screen at once, now it's stopped doing so and if I increase the display size too much I lose some of the screen off the side/s of the monitor i.e. it just magnifies without rejigging the text.
Anyway, thank you Dan and Adrian for the work you're doing.

Dan,

Seems to work ok after visiting a thread once, then next time takes me to the newest post.
First visit to a thread since the recent changes, the button takes me to the start of the thread even if I've visited the thread previously before the changes.

Great news, Dan! Nice to see all the usual suspects again.

Looks like, after I gave the system my username and password again (my browser normally signs me in), I'm good to go, with my avatar remembered, so nothing to kibitz.

Worth calling Armourtex in London, pretty sure they can re-finish and retain the headbadge.

Automotive primer doesn't work terribly well unless you blast the bare metal first to give it a key, hi-build primer works a bit better. The actual tubing won't make much difference.

Duly noted and many thanks; I'll let Adrian know there's a few things still amiss.

As for the login, check to make sure you've allowed your browser to accept cookies. I don't think that is the issue here, but it wouldn't hurt, as logins are stored with persistent cookies.

All the best,

Dan.

When logging in there are three boxes, Login with username, password and session length. Change the session length to your required time.
If you want your computer to remember your username and password you can change the password (click on account settings under profile) and you will be asked if you want to remember username and password to your computer, click on yes.
If you want to keep your original password just change it back again and you will be asked if you want to remember them to your computer.
If you don't want to log in every time then change the session time to forever, remember the usename and password to your computer and then every time you open the page on that computer you will automatically be logged in.
I'm not sure if there is an easier way but that is what I did and it worked fine.

Many thanks, Mac'; that's actually the preferred way, but I am still getting isolated reports of on-persistent log-ins.

Please, Anto and Id...can you try this and let us know if it cleared things up for you?

I appreciate any reports of niggles so we can clear them. I think Adrian has done a great job; it is just a big project and little things can easily slip through the net. You all are our eyes and ears for finding things we don't, thanks to different preferences and configurations. Thanks!

Best,

Dan.

I find that at http://www.thorncyclesforum.co.uk/ I appear not to be logged in.

But when I navigate into the forum at all, even to the home page http://thorncyclesforum.co.uk/index.php - then I appear to be logged in.

If I then return to http://thorncyclesforum.co.uk/ in the same tab, I am still logged in.

But at that URL in a new tabbed, again I appear not to be logged in. This is Firefox 39.0.3

This behavior is no problem for me, but maybe these observations will help diagnose any irregularities others may be experiencing.

The login works for me as expected after a bit of thought and work to restore parts that went missing in the translation because they are client side, not within the control of the forum operators, and thus have to be restored in order for the forum to work for you as before. Here are two examples:

TIP: The permissions you give your browser locally have not been carried forward to the new forum. You have to give your browser a new permission to remember the login name and password, otherwise it will ask you for it each time. In Safari, there's a popup that comes up every time you fill in a new login dialog and asks you specifically whether Safari should remember the login and password. Tell it yes. Other browsers probably have some similar arrangement.

TIP: You should also make the login time (on the login dialogue) as long as you can, otherwise the system will regularly demand that you log back in, which can be irritating.

On the old version of this forum, at the bottom of the main page, I could see a summary of the most recent posts. The summary had one line per post, and showed the topic, member name, and date. I don't see that on this new version, and I can't find any option to enable it. Is that feature gone?

I do see the "Recent Posts" page, and that page will do in a pinch. But I prefer the shorter summary, since I can see at a glance what the new posts are.

Thanks,
Dave

I'll look into it at greater depth, but I think that is one feature that did not make the trip from v. 1x to v.2x.

I miss it, too.

Best,

Dan.

Select "Show unread posts", top left, then bookmark the resulting page, then open the forum from the bookmark, and you always see only new posts.
