Hi All!
Silly season question of the day: Which jersey should I choose?
The local outlet of a national chain had a closeout on two fleece-lined jerseys. I feel I can afford to keep one (they said "take 'em both and see which you prefer". Okay...). They are identical except the colors are reversed.
The one I am leaning toward (Choice One) is predominantly red with black trim. The red portions are on the front and back, increasing visibility.
Choice Two is predominantly black with red trim. The black parts face forward and back. Not so visible to traffic, but much better at absorbing a bit of heat from watery sunshine (I have chosen most of my cold-weather clothing in black for this very reason. I can *feel* the difference).
Both jerseys match my red-and-black Ortlieb Packer-series panniers. Either jersey might be covered by neon-yellow/green high-viz wind or rain jackets, but I do have another rain jacket (pictured below) in a color scheme to match Choice One.
Which should I choose? ???
Best and thanks,
Dan. (...who thinks aesthetics sometimes come into play)

Four or two
-
I vote for Choice #1. It is more visible. It also makes you look more ... muscular. :)

Red one all the way Dan. A good contrast is always better than a so-so match. Besides, black on black renders you to a bit to close to Spidey-Dan!
-
Maybe some from the backside will help...
-
What a nice looking jersey Dan. Got to be the red one.
Andy
-
Gotta be the red one, Dan -- homage to Italia, better match with the bike & bags too, I think.
-
Thanks, everyone!
Things are tipping the way of the red one, but I also like black.
Will have to consider closely...! All thoughts welcome.
All the best,
Dan.

Showed the photos to my wife, who is an artist with good taste, if I do say so myself.
Her vote is for the black one, although she admits the red would be more visible.
I think the colour scheme on the back of the black one is quite attention grabbing myself.
So I vote go for the black, and keep your blinky lights on all the time, which do more to enhance visibility than a brighter jersey.
-
+1 for the red one Dan, I'm not a fan of 'high visibility black' for an outer layer ;)
-
Got to be the red one Dan - just do it!
Pete.
-
The obvious answer is blow the budget and keep both! ;)
-
Red one all the way. Visibility is a priority!
-
an artist with good taste
Uh, Ron, do we allow ringers in our wee contests? :-)
-
Dan,
I say this with utmost respect to my fellow Thornoids, whom I love dearly, but have OBVIOUSLY been collectively aflicted with a dreadful fashion sense!
The black is more stylish, more trendy (this year, black is the new black), and you'll be surprised at how visible that pattern is during the day. At night, it exhibits significantly greater contrast, and is presumably reflective?
Also, it makes you look, er... trimmer! It still matches the panniers (which you have wisely chosen the same as mine :)), and if you feel the need to don the crimson, you can just put on the jacket!
I say BLACK, good sir! More Rhett Butler than Scarlett O'Hara - that's why you prefer it, don't you?
;)
-
Dan,
It is red for me.
Julian.
-
Black is beautiful!

If Dan goes on to ask about colour of underwear next, I am leaving this forum !
:D
Nice bike though.
Sorry forgot - Red for visibility every time.
-
Red for better visibility!

Many thanks for your thoughtful opinions! I'll wait and see if a few more responses trickle in both here and on my Facebook page.
So far, "red" seems to be leading the race, but I do love the black also. I would love to get both, but for now it will have to be one or the other. With "multiple" bicycles competing for the spoils, I have a "bicycle budget" and Choices must be made. For example, lighting.
With the higher valuation of the USD$ against the €, I see the B&M IQ Cyo Premium is now less expensive for me. I could move the old IQ Cyo R to my most-used rando bike, so a new light for the Nomad means better lighting for two bikes in my stable.
Ah, choices! A 2nd Winter jersey with the season waning or decent lighting for two bikes with Spring just 'round the corner?
Now...red or black?
All the best,
Dan. (...whose underwear color is sorted ;D )
-
Black is the new red or is that red is the new black -who needs a go faster colour anyway.
-
+1 for Black.
-
I think Sammy said it all. So another vote for the........... BLACK
Regards Alfie

I have to admit, David's comment about the red one making me look "more muscular" tipped the scales heavily in favor of red...until I read Sammy's Rhett Butler comment favoring the black.
Man! This is a *tough* decision!
I might delay on the light to get both red and black jerseys. Hmm...pondering.... :-\
Though the light is available in black or silver, that one's easy: Black for the all-black Nomad.
All the best,
Dan. (...who would of course prefer the best of both worlds)

to be seen go day glow yellow ;D, coats on and door is open...

to be seen go day glow yellow
To be sure!
I've got that end of things addressed, Andy...
High-viz neon yellow for wind jacket, rain jacket, helmet cover, reflective leg bands, gloves, buff, and reflective safety triangle.
... so there is a good possibility either the red or black jerseys will be covered anyway! ;D
Ah, me. :D
All the best,
Dan.

You could use the red one (with a cape, of course) for your promotional photos, and keep the black one for riding.
Seriously though, they both look great, Dan. You can't go wrong with either choice.

Now you've done it, David, with mention of the cape. Ooh! :) I was mightily tempted by these...

...but settled down to the black or red one until this little nudge from you... ;D
All the best,
Dan. (...who frightens the neighbors enough already)

Cool, looks like that light will have to wait. :)
Which "Super Hero" are you going for? ;)
-
Hi All!
Suspense removed -- I'm keeping both, as some of you have suggested.
I sold some thing to offset the cost, and have found that layering the two works well for use in sub-freezing temps (at least down to 28F/-2C). I think I can extend below that by adding a wind jacket -- while warm from riding. Not sure how effective it/they will be when stopped and chilling-down.
A few cold nights are ahead in the next week, so we'll see. If layering these two works, it will mean a reduction in my packed clothing, replacing a medium-weight (fairly light but bulky) fleece and my Italian wool wind-faced longsleeve jersey.
I have found the jersey with the black body does absorb more heat from the sun than the red one, so now I can choose which I'd like to wear on top in really cold weather, and can swap between them when just one is enough.
Tests continue!
Many thanks to all for your kind thoughts and opinions; greatly appreciated!
All the best,
Dan.

Brilliant, Ian!
A whole bike path to color-coordinate with, and on Page Two of your link... a go-fast Bestianera Montecarlo Edition by T°RED at "only" £13,389, which should leave just enough in my budget to add a B.17, pannier racks, three bottles, a pump, mudguards, and dynohub lighting/charging to make it a proper tourer. :D
All the best,
Dan. (...whose color-coordinated world is expanding)

If further evidence were needed viz a viz your prescient comments re e-bikes then this is it. They all look rather snazzy too. My Dassi is a steal at £5,600! Pair of Marathon Supremes would definitely give me the edge over your Bestianara!
-
;D Race ya, Ian! ;)
All the best,
Dan. (..."On yer mark, get set...")
