I knew I should have had that ex-demo 570 for circa £1k from the SJS site. Bargain and virtually new. I love my Mk1 Nomad but it is rather depressing when you get left behind by the 700c club!

I love my Mk1 Nomad but it is rather depressing when you get left behind by the 700c club!
In4, I completely understand this, riding my Nomad MK2 around the place here in my neck of the woods.

When my bike was only a couple of weeks old and no one had yet come up and overtaken me, I thought I was
riding along quite nicely and semi quickly, but I have very quickly learnt that I'm going along slowly! The 700c
riders overtake me, spinning along in the 39 x 15 (or similar) and 2 minutes later they disappear out of sight.

However, when I'm happily riding along by myself, the Nomad and the big Schwalbe Marathon Mondial 26 x 2.15's
actually seem quite fast and make a nice sound on the sealed roads, making me "think" I'm riding at a decent speed, even if
I'm not.

I know by looking at my average speeds I'm not exactly going very quickly, but as the bike feels "semi quick" it is not too bad
(until the 700c bikers overtake me!) A group of 10 riders overtook me on their Saturday ride last week up a long 21km climb, and
I (playfully) shouted out to them as they overtook me "I'll race you to the top" and would you believe they laughed at me! (but
all in good humour) I remember (20+ years ago) being one of those guys in those bunches, and now I just have to pedal away and
watch them disappear in double quick time!

It's all good fun though,

Tony

i done a charity ride last sunday first time in a group in a year or so, my average was 15.5mph when i got home its usually around 13mph when i'm on my own so group riding is always going to be faster.
i'm happy enough at 13 thank you very much.

Hi all,
I purchased the frame as described on 'Singletrack' yesterday (thanks to jags). I have purchased to build with a set of parts and wheels that I have from a previous Mk 3 (black one) the frame of which I sold.
I will build the bike to my usual 'high' standard   :) and sell it. I have been moving my cycle parts for some time and as I am in and out of Hospital regularly it seems best to stick to a basic set of bikes which I now have. I no longer have the time nor enthusiasm or energy for much bike fettling. I just want to ride as much as possible given restraint of poor health.
The built bike will be offered on here and CTC (possibly Ebay) soon (supposing the frame arrives from Italy!!).
If anyone is interested I expect the full bike with 27 speed (bar end shifters) to be in the region of £695:00. I can possible post the completed bike also.
All the best,
John

John's builds are the best possible in terms of workmanship and results and are also aesthetically elegant.

Whoever buys one of his builds gets an exceptional machine, invested with great care to a very high standard from all I've seen.

Thinking of you an wishing success on the health front, John.

Best,

Dan.

Dan and Anto!
Thank you both.
The frame should be arriving from Italy next week, when it does I shall build up as soon as I can.
It will then be offered For Sale.
It is my way of moving out my wheels/gears/shifters/cables/brakes etc onto a built bike.
Best to all,
John

Just to vouch for what Dan says, whilst I've never bought a complete bike from John but I do have:

1. His grey Sherpa F&F and wheels etc. was my fav bike for a couple of years now used by my son

2. His red Audax F&F  (or should I say one if his red audaxes)

3. His black Audax F&F which I built up for a friend.

Service always good.

Kind words Anto!
Frameset and racks have arrived-from Italy. Incorrect size advertised and seller refunded immediately. Frame on its way back which is a shame.
Sorry to anyone who hoped for a newly built Audax Mk3!

Does the size matter if you were going to sell it on anyway?  ???

I'm guessing a different frame size might have affected installation and placement of ancillary items like mudguards.  The bridges would have been in a different place requiring new and duplicate holes be drilled in the 'guards. Possibly stays of different length as well.

John's fenderlines are second to none, so I'm guessing this might have been one factor among several if the bike was to be equipped with 'guards. He's a Detail Man who takes great care to get it right in all aspects.

Best,

Dan.

i'ts amazing how us thornies view a bike, guess we are all lovers of quality steel  frames.
i serviced my friends cannondale tourer the other day, although its a nice bike it doesnt hole a candle to the quality and build of my Thorn Audax ;).or now sold Sherpa.

i'm one of these guys that loves bikes always have, i've owned some great ones in my day,i wont stick my neck out and say the audax is better than any i've owned but yeah its well up there for sure.
i think the secret is to get the bike build exactly as you want it,i'm not just there yet with my audax still want dynamo and grand bios tyres once i get that sorted it will be one hell of a bike just the way i want it built to perfection.

Best of luck on the next go-'round, John. Sorry for the bother and disappointment the seller's oversight cost you but they did the right thing, quickly and honorably; commendable.

All the best,

Dan.

Good point obviously, but if it had not sold I would be stuck with it. Plus it was small and in my experience these small bikes are not greatly wanted. On top of that......
I could not test it or ride it in any way. Yes the mudguard fitting would have been compromised also.
All told I would only ever build a bike 'my size' for convenience.
As a matter of interest I may sell my own Mk 3 Audax which is mint hardly ridden, carbon forks (Kinesis not cheap ones) and as such keep looking here. It is a size 550.

Standover height looks perfect on the 550 @ 77.2cm. My Disc Trucker is 77.4cm and fits perfect.
Effective TT looks good @ 56.5cm.on the Audax. Surly comes in @ 54. That's OK. Actually I want another few cm's on my bike. Was considering getting a longer stem, so good size.
I've done a  200 Audax on my bike but at 16kg.........I stop on hills while everyone else sails by me. It's the 16kg. that kills me. The Thorn seems to be about 11kg. max. which I'd like.
Tempted! :P

i bought mine for touring my sherpa was overkill for me.
so I'll be dead interested to hear how you get on if you use your new audax for touring.
i bought all new lightweight gear except for tent still havent used it yet .i know I'm a geek but i don't like solo touring like to have a bit of a laugh.
anyway  planet x post a few photos of the new baby when it arrives and if you use it for a few tours let me know how it worked out.

Audax to be used purely for Audax riding. Plan to do a couple of 200's this year. Dying Light & Dying Cow for sure. Might do the Virginia 300 if I can find the legs, but I'll have to stick a SON dynamo hub up front first.
Hoping.......
