Now there's a handsome fella, as well as a purrrrty bike! It's making me feel patriotic - all red, white and blue! :)
Can't wait to see it all come together. Build it and use it well, Anto. It'll be a source of great pride as well as a great ride.
Sam
BTW You won't need that "placeholder" bike much longer, by the sound of it (not suggesting you get rid of it or anything... There's no such thing as too many bikes! :D)
-
What a summer you're going to have, Anto! Congratulations on your new baby.
-
Hey Anto!!
Great news... I kept telling you the Audax was more your style than a Club Tour...
I'm looking forward to reading the next instalment.
Cheers,

im not gonna rush into the build i still need bits and pieces but i dont mind waiting,as long as i have it on the road by May i'll be happy enough.Think my campag reckord brakes will be staying on the Raleigh might go for a new pair of shimano 105 or ultegra.i also have to buy new drop bars and stem plus bartape also new barbag.and too bottle cages .i will get my son in law to make me a nice stainless bracket for my battery lights can afford a new front dynamo wheel maybe next year.
have to figure out a way to mount the satnav centre of stem,if i could sus out a flat top stem the fitting would mount no problem.
anyway lads thanks for all the good wishes really appreciate it keep cycling kep safe.

Hi Anto,
If you look on SJSC website you need 57mm drop I think. I am certain that 'Honesty' on here or someone can advise.
Im laid up today (sorry).
John
-
ah no worries john get better soon, feet up watch a good movie.
-
woo hoo look what i found.
http://roadcyclinguk.com/gear/tested-thorn-audax-853.html
i was searching for what brakes i should get they have ultegra rxd 100 on that beauti.cant afford ultegra so what else do.

John
Anto
John is right, you need 57 mm [deep] drop brakes for this.
Options are Shimano R451 (Tiagra type) or R650 (Ultegra). Tektro do deep drop brakes too, but they get bad reviews ... mine certainly had crappy brake pads which I had to replace asap.
I would go for the Shimano R650.
Jim
-
I have the R650 brakes. They are very good, especially with koolstop salmon pads. Be aware that if you are using them with newer STI levers (10 speed upwards) they are not as effective as if using with 9 speed. I believe this is because of different cable pulls. The R450's are basically the same brakes but with plastic bits for some areas where the 650s have metal. Off the top of my head the trim lever is the most obvious. Other than that TRP have recently bought out some very nice looking standard drop brakes (57mm is standard, 39mm is short, even though they're called standard and deep by people now ;)) which look very nice and work with 10 speed stuff better.
-
excellent lads thanks for that.unfortunately i can't buy yet but i need to get a shopping list together.
Brake callipers /sorted (Well when i have the dosh)
Break leavers to suit above/?
Shallow drop bars size 44cm/to buy
Stem to match 90mm/to buy
2Bottle cages/to buy.
jeez theres no end to this so much for swapping everything over from the Raleigh.
pity SJS cycles don't do credit. ;D ;D
-
I knew the Audax was for you Jags, it looks stunning, bet you're chuffed to bits? Can't wait to see the build updates and the finished article,
Neil.
-
Sure am Neil but you'll have to wait another while ::)
think i'm gonna have to try and sell my guitar again to get this baby on the road.
-
Jags,
That will make a well cool bike. I am very pleased for you.
Peter
-
think i'm gonna have to try and sell my guitar again to get this baby on the road.
Aw, jags! Jack is crying at this news. "Don't let 'im sell!", he says. "Not much I can do, Dad", I tell him, "Anto needs brakes. Handlebars. the various needed bits to get this beauty on the road". He's now torn between the bike and the music, but supports you either way.
All best your way, Anto; I'll keep a lookout on good deals for you. It'll all come together soon enough.
Dan.
-
Anto,
I am sure that if you ask nicely the gang on here could donate some parts, its the postage to Ireland that damages. I for instance have bars and stem you are welcome to, but postage rears its ugly head.
John
-
thanks dan and john but i'm gonna find the money meself.i sure hope i'm not coming across as a guy thats always on the look out for freebies :-[
if i got a buyer for my guitar all will be fine, Dan i seldom pick it up it gathering dust so i would be better off getting it sold and buying the things i need and use ;)
thanks again lads but i'll get there in the end fear not.
anto.
-
thanks dan and john but i'm gonna find the money meself.i sure hope i'm not coming across as a guy thats always on the look out for freebies Embarrassed
Anto,
Sorry if I put my foot in it!
I just know most of the 'gang' would have parts lying around never used, I know I have. I have been getting rid of most, but wished I had chucked the bars, a stem and more into the Audax box you received. Things which I will not use.
So-no you do not come across as looking for freebies.
Enjoy looking at the frame for now, oh and yes, sell that guitar!
John
-
no worries john my son noel just told me to take the bars and stem off his fixie that he seldom rides ::)you didn't put your foot in it John far from it thanks buddy really appreciate all your help.

-
Well nearly there lads i have it ready for a test ride tomorrow not to far as i need to fine tune the gear, the brakes are only temporary get proper fitting ones when i can afford them (such is life).
still need to fit mudguards /rack. new headtube spacers.bartape.computer/waterbottle cage.

hah couldn't resist so i went around the block freezing cold ::)
first impression man i love it feels so different more lively, couple 30 milers will tell the story i'm sure.but cant really do any big miles on it until i get the brake calibers.if i can nail noel down tomorrow to fine tune the gears he's much better at that than me ,i will finish it off tomorrow night ,well as near as possible.but yeah so far so good.
thanks Dan for posting the photos sorry for being a pain, one day i'll learn to post them myself, but don't hold your breath.
i'm away to me bed nite nite.
jags.
-
Wonderful preliminary report, Anto...'sure glad you didn't have to stop in a hurry! :o
first impression man i love it feels so different more lively...
Is this the death knell for the Raleigh? If you've just bought the perfect new All-'Rounder that can go-fast and still carry the occasional camping load... :-\ :'( On the other hand, maybe Noel gets a new bike? ;D
Best,
Dan.
-
Nearly there Anto, it's looking really nice :D
-
Anthony!
All I did was go out on one of my bikes for a nice Sunday ride. Look what happens when I take my eye off the ball!
The bike is being re born in Ireland. I hope the parts come together and that you have some lovely rides.
All the best,
John
-
It's looking stunning Jags, I'm glad nobody opened the doors though ;D. I can see you putting putting a fair few miles on it this summer,
Neil.
-
HI Jags,
You're doing a grand job of the rebuild, and it wont be long before you're put some serious miles on your new baby.
Best Wishes, Alfie
-
thanks everyone yes well pleased,i 'm still waiting for ya man to come to life (Noel) ::) Paddy's weekend so he's in no form for messing with bikes.
she's sitting here beside me looking class ,i can almost hear her say come on anto lets go out and play, but she will have to wait another wee while.
yes i will get loads of great spins in the coming weeks / months you can be certain of that.
i think my riding position is spot on i have it exactly the same as the Raleigh and Sherpa i don't mind be off a few mm here and there anyway i can always tweak things as i ride along .
i 'm heading out to me shed now to fit mudguards computer bartape,I'll post a few pics to Dan tonight.
anyway lads thanks for all the good wishes.
jags.

Do you think Anthony will make it look as good as it was before I sold it to him?
;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
John
-
i will have my work cut out john. ;)
john the mudguards wont fit because of the brake calibers also i can't get the left strut onto the braze on on the left side for the carradice expedition rack for barley.caliber arm in the way ::)
when i get new brakes will these problems be illuminatedhn did you use the shimano r650 57mm brakes on it.
thanks.
anto

Here ya go! ;D

Best,
Dan. (...who is hurried at the moment)
-
Ah great stuff Dan your on the ball.
yes Nicole loves it had to wheel her all over the place then chloe wanted a go as well ;D ;D
the brakes are holding up the finish so cant fit ract or mudguards.gonna have to wait a bit longer ah well not to worry i'll get there ,so what do you think so far.
jags.
-
Anto
Those mudguards were on that bike. Brakes are deep drop of course. The stays fit the frame as it is.
John
-
cheers john. yeah i just need new brakes once i get them sorted everything should fit fine.,i was riding it up and down the road at 2am,a taxi drive was staring at me he must have thought i stole it. ;D ;D and making aquick getaway.
jags.
-
That is a beautiful looking bike Jags. Love the colour scheme. Hope it was all worth the wait.
Jackie
-
cheers jackie yip well worth it still doing a bit of tweaking tho feels strange but in a good way.
-
cheers john. yeah i just need new brakes once i get them sorted everything should fit fine.
Reminds me of when I was a kid, riding about on a bike with no brakes ... I "braked" by putting my foot on the front tyre wedged behind the forks, a deft touch was required to prevent going over the handlebars! :P
-
Jim just in from work (if you could call it that ) ::) brakes are not to bad but I'm just be carefull not to break to hard, amazing how dirty the bike gets with no mudguards >:(
so yeah when i do eventually buy new brake calibers Shimano R650 will my campag sti leavers be compatible with them or will i need to buy new leavers.
-
I think your campag levers will be fine. On my Audax I have Shimano RX100 deep drop brakes (previous model to R650) and Campag Mirage ergo levers and they work perfectly.
-
Thank god for that ::)
-
Well first spin on new Audax today ;)
it was just 20 miles but i did have to meet a lad at 1pm .the day was very windy and cold but the bike preformed great made me forget about the weather.i was hoping it wasn't going to be to different from my Raleigh i'm so used to that raleigh it's almost part of me ;D.
well glad to report it was every bit as good solid as a rock lively and climbed very well.i let it rip going downhill just to see if there was any flex in the frame but it held the road as if it was on rails ,mind you i forgot the brakes weren't the best, the top of the blocks are hitting the tyre walls ah well i survived no harm done.i can't wait to get the new brakes sorted then i can finish the bike happy days.
so overall i'm well pleased thanks John for a great frame .and Jim for the pedals Ian for panniers and rack. and everyone else for the good wishes most appreciated.
if anyone has spare R750 57mm brakes in there spares box and willing to sell please let me know.
photo to follow from our man Dan.but hes out cycling the lanes as i speak.

that's one of my many cycling routes, this one is the Boyne valley and Newgrange.

Great to follow your adventures and the rebirth of your bike. You've done a great job. Looking forward to pics of that Irish countryside.
-
plenty to come pity the weather is so bad though.
-
Jags, please make sure that the handsome proud owner of that lovely audax is also in some of the photographs.... Smiling.
Alfie
-
Looks even better now it is built up. What it needs is five white stars of various sizes and at different levels on the seat tube where the blue and red meet. The five would stand in for the thirteen American breakaway colonies. Well, that's what this color scheme makes me think of, a flag, and how the EU stole the flag of the Thirteen Colonies.
-
i thought it was very british Andre not a hint of irish in it. :)
i'm gonna wait until i have it completly finished before i add any stickers on it.
so besides stars any cycling stickers that catch your eye let me know.

Just bought a nice set of deep drop brakes from a lad on the ctc site Tektro, not ultegra i know but as long as they work better than what i have i'll be a happy camper.

Hi Anto,
I am pleased that you are happy with 'my' frameset. Also making it look good in a different way, silver whereas
I used mostly black. Well done.
Enjoy,
John
-
Thanks John not finished yet stayed tuned, when i get these new brakes i should be able to completly finish it by the weekend.
-
Well lads i finally got me bike finished (one bottle cage needed).
but got the brakes fitted this evening mudguards ans rack ,panniers seem to be spot on no heel issue ;)
I asked Dan to post the photos i have on face book ,let you lads see the final build.
yeah the big test will come later on when i go for an overnighter but i reckon i should be ok just need to get my packing down to a fine tee i'm nearly there.
thanks all ejoy the photos when there up.
anto.

First batch coming now, Anto, posted by me on your behalf.
My! The bike is looking good, Anto! You need a pump to fit the pegs, and -- if you ever wish -- Tubus make cranked rack stays to accommodate obstructions.
What a beauty!
Best,
Dan. (...with more to follow)
-
More...
-
A couple more...
-
Brilliant thanks Dan your a gem.looks well what. ;) :)
-
SMART !.... what a great job you've done jags
Regards Alfie
-
thanks Alfie i'm well pleased.looks like i'm going to have to buy a rack bag for my day rides the barley doesnt sit at all well on the narrow rack,i will have to use the pannier until i can buy one.
i will also need a small barbag although if i can get away without one i will.
mind you they are handy for light stuff and snacks.
no end to buying for bikes. ;D
-
looks like i'm going to have to buy a rack bag for my day rides the barley doesnt sit at all well on the narrow rack
I ran into this problem myself when attempting to mount a rack pack to my rando bike's Tubus Logo Evo rear rack. I just used a sheet of DuPont Zytel plastic intended for another purpose. I slotted some holes for the rack-pack straps and attached it to the rack with nylon clamps, buttonhead allen bolts and nylock nuts. Done.
Putting a stiffener in the bottom of the rack pack helps but does not solve the problem of Tubus racks with too-narrow tops. The real solution is to attach a platform of the same width as the bag. Mine sits level and securely with no wobble.
I'll bet Paul can find something for you.
All the best,
Dan. (...who can think of a variety of suitable materials that will do the job)
EDIT: I see you've no lower rail to mount your panniers, Anto, so you'd need to mount them to the top (only) rail. A removable platform or larger slots/notches might work for both rack pack and panniers.
-
Fantastic Anto! That bike looks just perfect for fast, lightweight touring. I can't wait for summer to see pics of it on tour.
-
WOW! She looks stunning and what a shine on her. Brilliant job you have done there. What saddle have you got by the way? Struggling with my B17 Flyer a bit at the moment. OK in the sit bones area, just VERY uncomfortable in the rather sensitive area further forwards. Have been playing around a bit with the angle of the nose, but nothing seems to be helping much. Done around 250 miles on it so far and can see slight marks from the sit bones, but I can't imagine the frontal area softening as this is where the big bolt runs through the nose of the saddle. It's a womens version, so shorter than the men's. Really want it to work for me as I love the look of it on the bike and of course it's easy to attach a Carradice Barley to.
-
thanks everyone, Dan you done a super job on your rack but to be honest i'll make do with what i have,i dont have those extra straps for the panniers, but do i really need them ::)
my saddle is fizik alanti that particular one is top of the line its super comfy, but so too was my brooks.
-
Anthony,
Well done. Regarding the rack, it is a decent Tubus and should fit to the outer brazed on fitment. I think that as the rack is steel it should be possible but if you have tried without success.........anyhow you should now really fit both arms of the rack centrally as you have the left arm. But you should slide and fix the long arms across to be parallel with each other. No point in bending and it would look better also.
I am pleased that you feel it ok to fit those panniers as you know I would not use the bike like that. It is interesting to see how these things work in other peoples hands!
I hope you enjoy the bike and get loads of pleasure from it. Take off those bags and ride. I am certain that you will find the ride different to anything you have ridden previously. It needs winding up to get the best out of it!
By the way, what are those white bands around the tubes?
All the best,
John
-
Thanks John i'm pleased with the bike i reckon my touring load wont cause it to many problems.
i might actually take the rear rack off and put it back when i want to use the panniers.the barley is great for day rides so i will fit it back later today, house full of grandkids at the moment.
the bands are just decor no more than that.
i have a nice route planned for tomorrow no work thank god so lets hope the weather stays good.
anto.
-
Anto that looks super dooper!
Get the Barley on and ride like John says. Enjoy.
Steve
-
i have the barley back on for day rides.
i just finished packing my rear panniers with enough gear for an overnighter/or a week away. 4kg in each pannier and my tent weighs in at 2.5kg.so i reckon the audax should cope with that lot no problem if it doesnt i'll get the blow torch out and melt it.
jags.
btw no spin today lashed rain all feckin day and looking bad for tomorrow as well.

Jags' newest photo...and nearly done...!

Oooh excellent! Blue tape works a treat.

I can hear Beethoven's Pastoral symphony as I type! What a delight. Sate my curiosity; which Carradice is that and if so which support are you using. I'm stuck in the cleft that is a sprung Brooks and a Carradice Camper long flap so very interested in your set-up.
-
Thanks Folks yeah it a cracking bike for sure smooth as silk.that photo is about 10 miles from my house it's a favourate route for cyclists .around the coast as we say here ;D ;D
.
bag is carradice barley rack is the expedition works great but man is it ugly just as well the bag hides it.the wheel i won on facebook ,hand built onto mavic sups 36 hole dt swiss and 105 hubs still running through.
saddle is fizik alanti carbon and ti rails cost a feckin fortune but my arse likes it so cant complain really.
the campag sti leavers are just used for brake's they belong to my son ::) didnt have the dosh to buy new ones at the time i was building it up so i borrowed his.
i have the dura ace barens but to be honest good as they are give me STI any day,so if ever i get money i'll buy ultegra 9 speed sti .if ever i tour i have the tubus rear rack and ortlieb classic panniers (thanks Ian)and i use the Axiom barbag handy as i dont need a bracket to mount it just straps on perfect..
what i like about this bike is it climbs well as if you were on rails hard to explain but once in the right gear its just not a problem.last sunday i went out with the lads mostly climbing all day 4500 mt according to garmin ::) over 50 km.really class spin sun shining perfect cycling weather i came home as fresh as a daisy even went back for one of the lads on a climb, thats the type of guy i am ;D ;D
pics on facebook JIM,i would ask Dan to post them up but he's having enough trouble without me annoying him.
anyway my audax is some machine, wonder how the newer models fair against it.

-
Thanks a million jim, yeah it wes a super day on the bike i think i over did it with the route way to many climbs i suffered like a dog last night ;D ;D
but it was worth all the pain. i know all the back roads and lanes in my county, traffic was mental as you can see from the pics ::)
aw its great to get out when the sun is on your back yeah a super days cycling for sure....anto.

Wow what great cycling country Jags, perfect mixture of hills and flats.
The Audax is looking good, I knew it was the bike for you. I am hoping to get an Audax next year, how do you find it for climbing? Not sure whether to go for compact or triple chainset, how do you like your triple?
Keep the photo's coming,
Neil.
-
Hi Neil yes great cycling country ;)
i would go for a triple i was glad of the granny ring yesterday let me tell you.
the bike is great for climbing no problem at all.mind you i have a nice set of lightish wheels on it open pro and 105 hubs, and good tyres 90psi which all helps.
jags.
-
Cheers Jags, I was leaning towards a triple, being only 9 and a half stone I'm pretty good on the hills, it's the flats that I struggle due to lack of power in my legs.
I've provisionally bought a Raven Tour to go with my RST so an Audax would complete my dream bike stable nicely.
-
oh how i wish i was 9 stone ;D ;D
i was 23 years old last time i seen that weight ah well enjoy it while you can,
nice stable of bikes for sure.

Bring back Global Warming! I can count the number of days I was in shirtsleeves this "summer" on the fingers of one hand. Today I had to stop to put on a jacket only half a mile from home. That's not acceptable for August (Down Under can read the calendar upside down).
-
Our line on climate change, Andre, is that we're agin global warming, but some local warming would be nice. Visited my friends in the Madawaska Highlands on Thursday, and it was 8 degrees on Friday morning! Swamped with domestic chores to do before I leave for Berlin next Wed., for a week of cycling in Denmark with my daughter, & then 2 weeks in Sweden by myself; so, this week pastvI didn't make my annual tough 4-day ride through the hills NW of Ottawa. Bailed out & instead took the Subaru for an overnight of good food and talk. Happened that this week we've had bizarrely wet weather, 4 days rain out of 5, and 50 mm on what would've been the 2nd day of my ride. On a training ride ten days ago, two-plus hours of the three were in drenching rain ... But it'll be mild & sunny in Denmark & Sweden, I'm sure.
