Not Rohloff, but the Alfine 11. Still a fascinating look at the internals and its operation.

"Al-FEEN-ay"?
'Round here, they're called AL-feen.
I've occasionally heard AL-fine (like Alpine). :D
Huh. Always a revelation to find how things are s'posed to be pronounced. Kinda like Ciöcc, which few people seem to get right: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SJHwPqn2jY0
Fascinating video, as are the others.
Best,
Dan.

Google Translate (https://translate.google.com.au/?hl=en&tab=wT#it/en/alfine) tells me that Alfine (Al-FEEN-ay) is Italian for 'at last' :o

Does that mean "longer-lasting than Nexus 8-speed"? Enquiring minds want to know.

Does that mean
...
FWIW, I've always said "Al - FEEN - ay", pronouncing all the vowels: reckoned it could've been elfin, ao fim, en fim, enfin (="at last") or simply an idiosyncratic spelling of any of the above, or a Marketing-Dep't notion that whatever it was, it sounded Foreign-Exotic, Hence Desirable, a bit like "Spyder". Probably someone from the service dep't said to the gaffer, after working on the prototype, "Wot's this thing all about, Alfie?" and the Marketing Guy, overhearing this, said -- well, you know the rest.

James dear boy, you appear to have confused the Rohloff film footage with the Alfeeeenay one. Here is the Rohloff film:
