What gear system is this? I have searched for "Poleoff gear system" and just found links to yachting spinnaker pole systems. Other spelling variants gave nothing. Did you perhaps mean the Pinion system? Her trike does not seem to have this BB-mounted gear system though.

I believe it was a little humor, Pete (South Pole gearing system, aka "Poleoff").
Maria Leigerstam's White ICE recumbent tricycle is featured in detail here: http://www.icetrikes.co/community/ice-blog/white-ice-cycle
British adventurer Maria Leijerstam has braved savage conditions to become the first person to cycle to the South Pole from the edge of the Antarctic continent.
For details of her feat, see: http://www.icetrikes.co/community/ice-blog/world-record-set
Best,
Dan.
