Title: What's the oldest thing?
Post by: Matt2matt2002 on October 25, 2013, 05:22:59 PM
What's the oldest thing you have every leaned your Thorn against?
(Click stands and bamboo poles allowed)

Here's my effort
The Maiden Stone, Aberdeenshire UK

9th century pink granite Pictish cross / slab.

Close up shows a mirror, comb and mammoth / elephant creature carved into the granite

Drat!

Living in 'Merka, I don't think we have any manmade structures old enough to compete!

I have to go with natural granite outcroppings as "oldest", I guess. :-\ Either that or "dirt". :)

Best,

Dan. (...who sure enjoyed the photos)

Thanks Dan. I guess I should have qualified my question with 'man-made'

There are dozens of these things around these parts.

Here's a couple more of the same structure.

I find it very humbling to stand next to something like this, knowing it has been there for hundreds of years and will be there well after we have all gone.

Matt

On a lighter note. May I tag on a question here?

Having set up my posting I usually press Preview - take a look at my effort -  and then Post
For the last few weeks I am never able to connect to the Preview screen. I wait a few minutes and then press Post and it goes ahead.
Problem my end or....?

Ehhh...dunno, Matt. I never use Preview, so I will check it out on this post and see.
<later>
Yep! Works fine! I played around a bit and I do see the popup blockers in some browsers seem to see Preview as a pop-up and block it unless/until you allow it. There might have been a change if you've updated your browser or the add-ons/extensions used with it. I'd check there first and see.

Oh! Here's another thought: I see you've embedded the photos above using html tags. Before, you attached photos. Perhaps the change in Preview working or not is due to where the photos are stored. I can see a lag occurring when the html tags are searched for and linked during composition. Try it the other way (as an attachment) and see if it makes a difference.

Best,

Dan.

Matt,

One thing that's "all right" is your photos; enjoying them greatly!

All the best,

Dan.

A not uncommon problem in the higher reaches of weird science. See for instance THE GREAT SCIENTIFIC LEPRECHAUN HUNT at http://soupandnuts.wordpress.com/2012/04/07/the-great-scientific-leprechaun-hunt/

Parked the bike in the Lucca YHA, Ostello San Frediano - 6th century convent of the Basilica San Frediano, rebuilt in the 1200s

(Not my photo)

Then there was the Nuraghe Palmavera near Alghero in Sardinia. Fenced so we could not actually lean the bikes against it, but this village complex was built in about the 14th century BC ~3,300 years ago  :o.

O.K. "Founded 520 AD" probably doesn't mean it's still the original building, but hey!

Cheers,

You need to copy the img code on the right side of the Photobucket page, then paste that in your post, but without img tags.

Don't know how old is was, but the scariest thorn photo I've seen was a Dan posting his beauty standing seemingly unsupported on a very narrow bridge over a fast moving river.  Cannot remember which posting it was in.

Was it this one, Tom?

Hardest part was getting off the bike to take the photo! I'm flat-footed and generally have much better balance on the bike than off it!

 ;D

Credit the Click-Stand for keeping the lot upright. ;)

Best,

Dan.

Yep that is the one!  If that was me, I have an idea that me, the bike, and the click stand would have gone for a swim!  Great photo.
