Putting a feeler out lads.
I'm seriously thinking of selling the lot bike camping gear everything i have to do with touring.to be honest i really don't think I'll ever tour again the bad memories outweigh the good ones sad but through.
anyway I'm struggling to come up with a good price for me and potential buyer.
i have no intendions of splitting any thing its the lot or nothing, everything i have got little use so its all in perfect condition.
ok so here's what i'm selling.
Thorn Sherpa 51cm with tubus racks and dynamo lights / one spare wheel/ 3 sets of tyres.
Hilleberg Akto tent/ground sheet.
exped 7 down matt,
alpkit down pipedream 400 bag.
small gas stove plus pots plus gas cylinder full.
ortlieb panniers front and rear perfect.
thermarest compressable pillow medium
i think that about it as i said if i get good price i'll sell the lot its a job lot not splitting anything.
any takers or even what do you guys reckon its worth.
jags.

Sorry to hear you are calling it a day.
Couple of questions. How tall are you (so I've got some idea as to how suitable the bike will be for me). What kind of sum are you thinking of?
-
i'm 5.6 just about. to be honest i dont know what money i'm looking but im selling the lot as a lot i dont want to start selling bits and pieces.theres plenty f photos on the forum of my bike dan will sort you out on that score if you need to look at what it looks like.
thanks for the reply .
cheers

Whaaaah?!? :o
;D 'Kay, I'll do it. :D
Photos of jag's lovely gloss-gunmetal Sherpa, builtup very nicely with Deore XT componentry, mudguards and Tubus Evo rear and Duo front racks with STI/brifter shifting, are available in the following posts/threads:
http://www.thorncycles.co.uk/forums/index.php?topic=1744.0

...and various other places about the Forum, but the photos above will give a good idea of the bike's condition and appointments, which jags correctly describes as "class". I know jags is a very particular cyclist and keeps his bikes spotlessly clean and generally very well-maintained from what I've seen in photos.
What he is offering is in effect a complete touring kit in a box, with all essentials accounted for:
• Topflight expedition derailleur touring bike with the usual desirable accoutrements like tubular steel front and rear pannier racks, computer, mudguards, pump, bottle cages, and dynohub lighting.
• waterproof panniers
• well-regarded expedition touring tent with footprint
• a really nice/light inflatable mat
• a decent sleeping bag for one-three season use depending on climate/lattitude
• a basic gas-cartridge stove and cook-pot set.
Get the lot and you're out the door once you add your own clothing, tools, food, water, and miscellany.
Jags, you'll need to specify exactly what is and is not included on the bike itself so buyers will have realistic expectations. For example, does the GPS come with it? How 'bout the Brooks saddle? Etc.
One bit of advice to both parties...
To the seller: Don't do it.
To the buyer: A wonderful deal to get the lot.
All the best,
Dan. (...who expects equal amounts of regret and joy if this goes through)
-
Thanks for that Dan yes i could add the Garmin Legend always foundit hard to operate anyway ::)
yeah i have enough gear to tour the planet but i never will, all my gear is waisted on me to be honest i ride my Raleigh all the time now the sherpa is in dry dock.
btw i aint giving this lot away; being as i am, i spend a small fortune on all this gear to do that.if any one is truley interested i'll take photos of the lot and show you what your getting .
thanks again dan
cheers

So sad you are thinking of selling up Jags. Your earlier posts sound like you have enjoyed the Sherpa but I can see the sense of moving the touring kit on while it is still current. If you do sell I hope you're able to use the cash to take your cycling in different directions.
-
the sherpa is a class bike but yeah i'm no cycle tourer so why not sell the lot.i will be riding my raleigh753 it suits my type of cycling better.
price for everything 1750 euro, lots of extras and NO i'm not splitting it up. if interested i'll post a photo of everything.
cheers
jags.
-
I'm not in the market for your stuff Jags, I'm already fully equipped, but looking at your list in the initial post I would be guessing at a ballpark value of around £1300 / €1550 maybe a bit more if you get lucky and find the right buyer.
It would indeed be a great deal for someone looking for the full works to get into touring without all the agonies of shopping around or bidding on things individually.
-
cheers rual yeah hard to put a price on it but i'm oped to offers. ;)
-
I think it's worth more than £1300. Thats all good stuff. The Aktos go for quite a bit on eBay!
-
It's a bit of a watershed, Jags, for sure -- but also for sure the right thing to do if you're not using the bike & the gear. I had the same feeling when I sold my mid-'50s AJS scrambler, which I'd rebuilt with my son. Wasn't using it, motorcycles are meant to be used, and so it paid for a Thorn New Raven.
Your idea of selling everything as a lot makes good sense -- easier that way, and would be a bargain for anyone wanting to get into touring right away.
If you have difficulty selling the lot, *maybe* it makes sense to break it into a couple of smaller bunches -- but raise the price if you do that!
Glad you're enjoying your classic Raleigh. Have a friend here who bought a '67 Special Edition a few years back, one of only 50 imported into Canada all those years ago. He loves it. All the LBS mechanics lust after it.
Good luck anyway.
J.

-
Sorry for late reply Dan thanks for that your a pure genius on these computers ;)
i was talking to my son noel in america (SKYPE) amazing the tech stuff these days.
i told him i was selling the lot he said dad send it over here i'm gonna tour the lenght of new zeland nah he can paddle his own canoe he aint getting mine ;D ;D.
say dan thanks for posting those pics of my super disasterious tour of ireland, its as well i have a sense of humour, i'm going to write a short story about that tour make for a good laugh me thinks. ::)
so yeah anyway for 1600 euro (this price keeps dropping) you could jump on the ferry at holyhead i'll met you at port the bike will be ready to tour loaded with everything you could possibly want sat nav will show you the way around ireland, ;) spend a week here in sunny ireland and head home a happy camper.
-
absolutely jags you should write up your disastrous tour! Lemonade out of lemons!
these days my own sort of crushed dreams is made up of my library. I have like 10000 wonderful books 90% in a huge heap of boxes. Yeah I should be reading about 300 books a year but the reality is maybe 30 in a good year. The other days I told my sweetheart that my grand ambition is to reduce my possessions down to what could fit on a bike. Good thing about the load capacity of the Nomad! But she just laughed. Yeah who knows. But at this point my grand scheme of learning just about everything... ha! Selling books is pretty much a disaster. I did sell a bunch through Amazon and did make a month or two of grocery money out of it, but that cherry picking phase is over, the cherries are gone. So now I am just culling the herd and giving them away. If I can give away say 200 a year at least?
there is a lot of sense in being at least a tiny bit practical/realistic!
I'm glad you have a bike that you enjoy riding!
-
Jim I'm the worst reader on the planet no concentration, i usually have to backtrack to find out whats going on. yip a major geek when it comes to reading, but I'm a good painter and not a bad cyclist so that's 2 things i have going for me. ;D
my raleigh 753 is a class act i must have it near on 30 years still as good as the day it was made,i've only been into touring around 6 years or so i've had to woppers of tours one here in ireland and one in france, italy was with a group on road bikes another one to forget about ::) ::) man i can pick them thats the truth.
-
I can hardly imagine any kind of tour with a group. OK, last year we did the Erie Canal ride, but that is less a tour than a 400 mile party! But I am so slow, and I take breaks. To find another person, never mind a group, that could tolerate my lackadaisical style... not likely! -- Well, maybe John Saxby and I will find a way to ride together a day or two, since we're less than a thousand miles between us! -- but mostly my planning is just me and my bike and my tent. We shall see, whether plans and reality can get very close!
-

...Then sell the lot and recover costs After and have a nearly free tour.
Jags...for a deal like that, I'd shrink myself to fit the bike and join you t'morrow afternoon!
Best,
Dan.
-
yeah knowing what i went through touring solo is most definitely the way to go,i made the big mistake going with guys that had the tour planned from the start basically doing exactly what they wanted to do and see big mistake.
theres nothing stranger than folk ain't that the truth ;D...
Jim I'm a giver always have been I'm surprised one of my sons or wife hasn't killed me by now by the weird thing I've done or given away.anyone that was thinking of buying my gear would be getting a great rig with loads of xtras ,but people that ask a million questions really crack me up.
to be honest i could not care one iota if anyone buys but i would like to think that someone with a great interest in cycle touring would get some real pleasure out of all this gear at a great price.
well its way past my bedtime thanks for the chat talk tomorrow.
jags.

If (and I know that you do not intend to) you decide to split the campling gear from the bike I may be interested in taking the camping gear...
-
ok so when you say camping gear what exactly do you want. ;)
-
Hi Jags, only just seen your post as have been working nights. Sorry to hear that you've decided to move the Sherpa on, it's a beautiful bike. Are you just going to use the Raleigh now or do you have plans to buy another? I'm thinking a nice Cobalt Blue Thorn Audax would compliment the Raleigh perfectly. ;)
Anyway good luck with the sale, someone will be getting a fantastic bike and some very high quality touring kit.
-
hi Neil yes sale of the century thats the truth but i'm a geek for changing my mind if i dont get it sold i'm not bothered the wife will only get the money anyway'
Neil i was going to buy the Blue Audax but my Raleigh does the job perfect it just needs mudguards and maybe a dynamo lighting system.
-
ha! I was just googling "Raleigh 753" - what a bike! No wonder nothing else is as fun! Take good care of it and enjoy!
-
Class bike Jim i used to have campag super reckord on her but i gave it all away what a dummy.i recently put a new set of open corsa evo cx tyres on the new wheels as good as tubs very pleased with them 50euro each and now it has the new stronglight impact chainset lovely job.
i guess if i were brave enough i could do some light touring on it but would need to cut back big time on gear.thats the beauti of the sherpa you could carry a small car on that beast. ;D
theres plenty of photos on my facebook page of the raleigh. ;)
-
ok so when you say camping gear what exactly do you want. ;)

Hang onto their names, Anto, just in case the primary buyer falls through. Unlikely, but it's never over till it's over.

-
Keep the saddle whatever happens!
-
to late john part of the deal :'(
-
Hi Jags,
I've missed the forum for a few days and just read your news.
I'm stunned! Good luck with the sale... Someone's getting a good deal.
Of course, you realise that that in ordinary circumstances you'd have to leave the forum once you cease to be a Thorn owner but I'm sure that in view of your status we'll be able to bend the rules ;)
Cheers,
pj
-
Hah pete i'm surprized Dan hasn't fired me off long ago, nah i'll stick around who knows if ever i win the lottery i could always buy the latest thorn. ;)
-
Aw, we'll keep y'around, jags!
B'sides, I can see you on shiny blue Audax before too much time passes and we'll need Ride Reports. The new Mk3 brochure is out and available here: http://www.sjscycles.com/thornpdf/Thorn_Audax_Mk3.pdf
Very tasty!
Best,
Dan.
-
hah thanks for that dan you would make a great salesman. ;D ;D
-
oh man just drooled over that audax what to do what to do .
simple thing but whats putting me off is the postage costs :o
i have a fair bit of gear to build it up ,those cxp blue wheels would look stunning on it but it needs a new rear hub.i have a spare alanti fizik saddle /bars/cables/campag brakes/pedals time/
oh man the wife will kill me will i wont i. sure is a peach of a frame though it needs a guy like me to look after it ..money burns a hole in my pocket.
i'll be back this story ain't over yet.
jags. :-\
