Title: Why doesn't thorn make a through axle steel fork?
Post by: No on August 05, 2013, 10:38:15 PM: For those of us that would like to use such an axle so that we don't have to change wheels when switching to proper suspension forks?

Schmidt has a thru axle hub now, so, it would be neat.

I think you are in a very (vanishingly) small subset of people with downhill suspension who also want a rigid option.....

Yes "Throught Axle's" have a place? ie: All Mountain and Downhill, plus maybe 29"ers but if you have a good front Hub and a "Good" QR (not a light weight one) then all is all OK

Throught Axle's are good at selling new Mountain Bike's and Mountain Bike Mag's!

I like them because they help me sell a new bike to friends with a good year or two old MTB.

Were you thinking of which size Throught Axle? 15mm, 20mm, or one of the odd ball size's that are coming out?

I'll stick to my STD QR 9mm front and 10mm rear, sorry I would like to buy a new Mountain Bike too to ride but all the bikes we sale at the Shop I work at use 10mm x 142mm Throught Axle? so I can not fit a Rohloff Hub to them :( :( :o

Post by: No on August 07, 2013, 07:23:43 AM: Why couldn't you just make the dropout weldy tab thingy taper down in a nice curve to fit the tubing and then not place a disk brake tab on there? If you curve it right the stresses won't rise and without the disk brake mount there's no need for an extra stiff fork.

I have been a motorcycle mechanic for over 30 years and most motorcycles under 250cc have a 10mm front axle so why do you think you need to run a through axle on your touring bicycle?

The STD front axle on All Bicycle's (apart from a few MTB's) is 9mm it is very strong and will only break if you start doing "Drop In's" off cliff's!

If you think the 5mm QR rod is not up to your loading (which it is) you can buy some hubs with "Nutted" 9mm Axle or one of the Hub's made to run with a 9mm QR through axle which fits into any STD cycling fork.

9mm front axle forks and hubs Do Pass the new tough Europe Safe STD so all is OK.

If at the end of the day you still think you need a Through Axle?
