Despite 25 years in the saddle, I have yet to master the basics of cycle upkeep and maintenance.
I've booked myself on a course, but I'd like to find a good, clear, all-encompassing book as well.
Any recommendations?

The Haynes guide isn't a bad one to start with. If you've ever used their car maintenance guides, expect the same high standard and clarity of description, together with clear photography of what they're talking about.

I've got the Haynes book, it is good but I prefer the instructions on the Park Tools site.
