Pete had some really good suggestions, too; spot-on!
Me? I use 1984-vintage Dia-Compe P/N 1247 alu hangers with brass bushings, a black-anno'd pulley wheel, and a q/r lever as my straddle hanger of choice on bike having either cantis or brazed-on centerpulls. I usually use the front one with a separate q/r hanger under the headset nut as a parking/security device. When both q/rs are closed, everything looks "normal" except the front wheel won't turn. The hanger's q/r lever clears the headlight bolt, unlike how it appears in the photo. Bike's dirty and needs a wash.

kinda fell out with my lbs long story but believe me it was his loss big time ;)
no i usually buy all my gear online besides it can work our much cheaper and a bigger range to choose from.
i hate having to do when it comes to fixing up my bike ,if i can afford to buy the best for it i will not only does it look CLASS but seldom will it break or stop working and if any quality part breakes the people that made it will 99.9% of the time change it without any hassle .
still a big fan of top of the range shimano gear excellent
my paul canti brakes are top notch really well made.
sherpa frameset superb ;)
tubus racke good but could be better
ortlieb panniers excellent cant be faulted
Brooks saddle comfort at its best.
my handbuilt wheels by sjs are as good as the day i bought them ;)
ah i could rabbit on for another hour but things to do ;D ;D

how did i never spot that ::)only problem i havent checked yet but i need 2 and sjs are way to expensive for postage around 12.50 to ireland .
i would be happy for them to post it by crow or pidgeon or even a ordinery envelope but thats a whole other arguement sorry .

You're a funny man, Pete. Let me take you gently by the hand to stop you escaping in horror while I explain to you.
We don't have good LBS here at all. I have a blacksmith who just breaks stuff on any kind of a sophisticated bike, for instance, he just bent away mudguard stays to fit disc pads, and broke the special SKS safety fitting, and by the time I had new bits landed here from Germany (no local suppliers) it cost me €60 including phone calls and carriage. Oh, by the way, on a common Shimano disc brake, he took four tries and six weeks to get the right pads, after I wrote down all the numbers for him, and then what he got were cheap generic pads, not the good one I wanted, and his supplier told him to take it or leave it. The next nearest bike shop uses college kids for mechanics; it's strictly a sales operation of poncey bikes for posing on rather than riding. The nearest bike mechanic who actually knows what he's doing, and who'll order the right part, is fifty miles away over a very dangerous small crosscountry road; it's cheaper and less tiresome for me to deal with Germans a couple of sea passages away. So much for your beloved LBS.
As for Avid, they're a) too good (read long-lasting) and b) not fashionable enough (read high margin) for the local clowns. What you tend to get is BBB (good stuff if pricey) and generic Chinese excrement, nothing in between.
To get a wheel built I have to take it twenty-odd miles to a man who used to build wheels but now doesn't have time (because he's selling rubbish bikes on a government scheme), who sends it to Dublin to the fellow who will actually do the build. You can understand why I'd rather pay Rolls-Royce prices in Germany and get guaranteed quality.
My actual good "local" bike shops are Chainreactioncycles in Belfast, about 250 miles away, in another country, a mail-order operation, SJS in England, across the Irish Channel, and dealers in France and Germany and the Netherlands and Belgium, across the English Channel as well. To get even a small bracket landed here costs a minimum of €15 for post plus the bracket; SJS charges £18 for postage. In Ireland bicycling isn't for poor people.
You're pretty lucky to be so well served.

Hi All,
I'm Saddened by the news of Your LBS!
I know that there is a lot of big chain shop's in NZ and overseas that are just after Your money, But once you find a good (small) cycle shop it helps loads finding the small thing's
I'm lucky having been train as a Motorcycle Mech that I can do all my own work, Love building up the best wheel's in the World Myself ;) and one day may start building My Own Bicycle Frame's (I build my 1st frame back in school, a large BMX frame to fit me as only small for sell in NZ)

the bike shops over here are only interested in making quick money and also selling crap bikes and gear to the ordinary joe soap on this bike to work sceem.not interested in guys like us always making a big issue when you look for any special parts or something they dont stock.
