will the fixing for the ortlieb barbag fit a quill stem.
Yes; if it is the standard Ortlieb cable HB mount, it will fit either a threadless stem, quill stem, or the Thorn Accessory T-bar.i just took the bag of my sherpa and i'm now trying to fit it to my raleigh but it just will not tighten,HELP.
Ah, that's a different problem, and one that is easy to fix.
Jags, this has happened to me, and to almost anyone who has attempted to transfer the Ortlieb mount *and* wants to re-use the fixing cable.
What has happened is, the socket at the end of the cable has gotten stuck inside the plastic housing to where the bolt can't tighten it; instead, it causes the cable/socket assembly to spin fruitlessly, but not tighten.
It is...infuriating!
The solution is to:
1) Remove the mount (I presume it is sort of half-on, half-off at the moment), and lay it down on a table.
2) Undo all the bolts you can reach. Flip it over. Look inside.
3) Now, if you have a pair of needlenose pliers or such, reach inside and push (not pull) to release the cable from where it is held up. It is held up in the first place 'cos it has become distorted from the bolt clamping it and from the corners of the plastic channel.
4) Next step: Fish the cable out from the front. Look at it. See if it is damaged in any way. There is likely at least a nick in the plastic covering the cable. That may or may not be a problem, depending on where it comes on the new stem. The plastic is designed to prevent the steel cable inside from marking your stem. Mine had a tiny nick when I reused it, but that was all. I managed to spin the cable such that the nick was up (away from the stem). I put a drop of super glue on it and touched it up with black paint. Done. But then, I'm cheap er, "Careful". ;)
5) If the cable looks sound and uncompromised in any way, reinstall it as you would an original, give it a try, and the tension bolt should take up the slack. TIP: You may have to really pull on the end of the cable with pliers to fully seat the socket in the plastic well and take up enough slack so the bolt can tension it.
More likely, the cable itself will be nicked or distorted from the end of the clamping bolt. If that's the case, I would...
6) ...Really urge you to replace the cable. A cable failure would drop the lot into/onto the front wheel, and the outcome would not be a happy one. A replacement cable over here costs about USD$8 to $12...a small price to prevent the loss of your teeth or to keep your other collarbone intact. Me? I am a belt-and-suspenders man who actually carries a spare cable on-tour in case mine breaks. It has been known to happen, and there really is no ready substitute you can craft on the road.
'Nother TIP: Most people wonder if they should set the mount up so the bag is level. They probably should...not. With a load, the bag sags a bit, and ends up tipping down in front, where it presses on cables or a headlight. A good rule of thumb is to set up the mount so the face (the part that mates with the bag) is parallel to (same angle) as the head tube. That way, when the bag is attached and a little weight added to it, it will end up truly level and not pointed down in front.
Of course, some people prefer their bags to point up in front, and so they set the mount at the same angle as their stem. It is just a matter of personal preference.
Hope this helps.
Best,
Dan.

Sorted panic over
Ah, well, that's good, jags. As mentioned, it seems to happen to everyone who tries to re-fit these things, so you're not alone.
Best,
Dan.

thanks a million dan i have been routing at this for well over an hour .
i had the cable going into the wrong holes ::)
anyway i finally got it sorted.
my next job now is to buy and fit new mudguards ,saddle support and fixing new head light.

Even better solution is to use a Klickfix mount. Almost the same design as the Ortlieb, the Ortlieb bag fits, and it is more easily fastened and secured.

Pete,
That ClickFIX mount is a lovely-looking thing, and of course the red-and-black color scheme appeals to me.
By any chance, does it depend on a cable to prevent drooping, or does it use rubber shims or something under the clamps? Is it really secure over time and on rough roads?
Tempted. Think it might clamp onto a Thorn Accessory T-bar?
Best,
Dan. (Red and black...yes, it would look nice, and if there's no need to carry a spare cable...)

Four bolts tighten the plastic clamps around the handlebar. The cable is just used to hold the bag at the angle you desire. If the cable should break (highly unlikely) the bag will just sag down, not fall off. The cable can easily be replaced with a section of brake/gear cable - this is what is holding it on my road bike.
I've hardly even had any of mine even shift a bit over the past 8-10 years I've been using them.
-
yeah thats a lot more simple that ortlieb ;)

Jags,
Pete's excellent suggestion to investigate the KlickFix mount caused me to do just that. The manual shows how it installs:
http://www.klickfix.de/images/downloads/bedlenk.pdf
But...there's something else that may interest you about it. KlickFix/Rixen& Kaul offer two different accessory brackets (MultiClip) that clip into the HB bag mount. Go to: http://www.klickfix.de/index.php?lang=en then Adapter Overview > KlickFix Handlebar Adapter System > MultiClip
(http://www.klickfix.de/images/php/img.php4?i=../.././images/produkte/big/0211m.jpg&w=500&h=500&bg=ffffff)
With one of these, you could mount your GPS centered in front of the stem, much as you had with the handmade mount on your Sherpa. The larger model would also give you a place to mount your computer and a SkyMounti slope indicator...all while leaving your handlebars clutter-free.
Best,
Dan.

I like this mounting too, look's nice and clean.
Why do Ortlieb come with the cable mounting ???
Pete...

well i just put my ortlieb barbag on and to be honest that clicfix addition wont do the job.
it would have to be about 4 inches in height to clear the top of the bag to be of any use.
no i think i'll be going with a clamp of somekind for the forks.
i wont get the headlight onto the brake caliber either because i only have about 3 inches from top of tyre to bottom of bag and i still havent got the mudguards yes so even less space...
just on another point did you know that SJS cycles charges on each item ordered even though they may come in the one order (parcel) that doesn't seem right to me cost a bloody fortune for postage.

I admit I have not placed a multipal item order for a while, but in the past the minimum postage charge was not multiplied item by item :) Maybe they have changed the policy.
Paul.
-
jags,
the postal charge is meant to be calculated on the total weight of items ordered.
julk.
-
julk when i put the clamp on my wish list it said £9 and £7 postage i then added the headlight and the charged for that as well so if i keep adding stuff are they going to charge for each item .
feck that for a game of cards .i dont think they go by weight julk if they did it would only cost around a tenner to post maybe they should change thers courier ;D ;D

I think it probably depends on ones location. Export orders being more expensive postage wise. Thats my take on the words from the website.
Paul.
