Title: Twistshifter Ear Torx Screws for Rohloff Speedhub 500/14 - 8203, in US?
Post by: keleher on April 21, 2012, 02:48:38 AM
Rather not have to send to England for a $1.50 part. Anyone in the US carry these screws, or is some commonly available screw a good substitute?

Thanks,
pete

Hi Pete,

My usual source, McMaster-Carr ( http://www.mcmaster.com ) failed to come through for me this time.
Bolt Depot failed this time, too. The closest they have is a non-metric, black-oxide thread-cutting version (no!):
http://www.boltdepot.com/Machine_screws_Torx_flat_head_type_F_Steel_black_phosphate_finish.aspx
If you could be content with a Phillips/cross-head, they have that in metric sizes:

Aaron's has some promising entries linked from here: http://www.aaronstorxscrews.com/

You may wish to check the Rohloff dealer locator to see if there is a nearby source. See: http://www.rohloff.de/en/service/dealer_finder/index.html

If you don't find what you're looking for there, I'd try:
Aaron's Bicycle Repair, Inc.
6527 California AVE SW
Seattle, Washington 98136
(206) 938-9795
http://www.rideyourbike.com/index.shtml

I think they'll be able to find the appropriate torx-headed machine screw for you if anyone can.

In the end, I's suggest SJS Cycles, my own choice for "online local bike shop":
http://www.sjscycles.co.uk/twistshifter-ear-torx-screws-for-rohloff-speedhub-500-14-8203-prod10975/
They're about as fast as anyone domestic to the US and they actually have stuff in stock and ready to ship (and do, quickly!). Only $5.60 for 1, $7.29 for 2, postpaid. Kinda hard to beat that in the US when you figure shipping costs, which often total more than the small parts I buy.

Hope this helps!

Best,

Dan.

Perhaps on the rotary control it may be okay, as it isn't a very expensive part, but in general I wouldn't use any fasteners on the Rohloff hub that weren't blessed by Herr Rohloff.

Rohloff has an authorised workshop somewhere in the States. I don't know where it is, but read about in an account of a tour across the States. Possibly Crazy Guy on a bike. He sent a Rohloff wheel by courier and huddled in a motel until the courier returned it from them. I imagine they would have small items like the correct length screws readily to hand, or will know who stocks Rohloff bits in the States.
