Title: How far did you pedal your Thorn in 2011?
Post by: cake on January 01, 2012, 09:00:29 AM
I pedalled my Raven Tour 3621 miles.

That's 19068 miles since i bought it, and one thousand miles less than the previous year.

Lower Thorn mileage was due to work and also 1600 miles of Audax rides on my road bike.  I did manage to do the Baldock 300km on my RT at the end of July though - 193 miles in 16hrs and 20 mins.  Very comfortable it was too, well, as comfortable as you can be after that long on a bike!

I did 1609km which is bang on 1000 miles on my RST, but I've only had it since September and have only just dipped my toes into audax rides.

This year I'm looking to get in around 6000 km, and get some longer audax rides in, hopefully building up to the UK National 400km which is something like 2.5 times longer than I've ever ridden in one day and that was 20 years ago, so I think I'll see how my first 150 and 200k rides go before I dare sign up for it.

My odometer reads about 1800 miles, but I just added that at the end of May. I guess I rode my Nomad about 2500 miles in 2011.

My biking has had its ups and downs over the decades. A few years ago I was hardly biking at all. I don't think I am biking particular faster now than a year ago, but it's easy to tell that I am stronger. Hills that would really exhaust me, now they're still difficult but not at my limits.

7,399 miles bettering my target of 6000 by some way. I'm a bit surprised to have done a thousand more than last year despite the fact that 2010 included LEJOG.
So that 15,500 since I bought the Sherpa in Aug 2009 and I had to replace the original brake shoes at 14,000, thought these Swisstop blues were supposed last longer than that!

Only 1000 miles  :'(

For the last 8 years I have average about 4000 to 5000 miles a year but this year I have been suffering from bad Achilles tendentious.

(The tendentious was started by cycling while on antibiotics - DON'T EVER DO THIS!!!  I have only cycle about 100 miles since April)

Very useful to know.

I expect my 2012 mileage to be very low - fatherhood began on Christmas Day!

Oh, and I cycled 1,725 miles in 2011, 1,250 on the RST.

I did over 300 miles in May and in June, but fell away after that because of lots of miserable weather.  I am hoping to do at least 2,400 miles this year - going to try to be less wind and rain averse.   :D

My RST total for 2011 was 10,400 km. I reckon this is 50% commuting/general transportation and 50% "just going out for a ride, won't be long". I was slightly surprised as I've not done many long rides with the exception of a 600km long weekend which was a 250km first day, which was the furthest I'd been in a day, a 100km circle of the Norfolk coast and Broads, followed by 262km return journey setting my new longest day record (I followed the same route as on day one but got slightly lost) And all done with no aches and pains - RST, Brooks, Thorn comfort bars and Ergons.

British Eagle Touristique - 37.0

2008
Thorn RT - 4224.3
British Eagle Touristique - 535.6
Orbit Single Speed - 170

2009
British Eagle Touristique - 2476 (frame broke)
Thorn RT - 1404
Orbit Single Speed - 532
Condor Fratello - 517 (New)
Ribble Audax - 513 (replaced Brit Eagle)

2010
Condor Fratello - 3657.5
Orbit Single Speed - 955.5

With my bikes arriving two weeks before the snow I only managed 300km on the Nomad and just over 100 on the RST as it had no pannier racks fitted at the time.

I have ordered some studded tyres and fitted a rack to the back of the RST so hoping to get some good mileage done once the roads permit.

No specific mileage targets for 2012 but we shall see how it goes

Congrats Cake - hope 2012 is a great year for you.

Get a baby seat for the back of the bike - then you get to cycle, babysit and be a hero at the same time.

I have found no better way of getting a screaming baby off to sleep than on the back of the bike.

Just make sure to wrap them up really really warm and when I take the grand daughter out I always use standard pedals rather than cleats or toe clips.

I have a baby seat that bolts on to the seat tube with a quick release. It doesnt interfere with the rear carrier and it gives the child seat some suspension

3285 miles for my Thorn Audax Mk3, almost double the miles I rode in the year before. Although the Thorn's not my lightest bike it's the one I like riding most as it's so comfortable, versatile and reliable. Took up audaxing and just scraped through a Randonneur 500 (http://www.aukweb.net/handbook/awards.htm) series of rides which was fun, hope to do more this year. Had my first go at touring with it too and found it rode very well loaded.

Great mileage and a lovely shot of a lovely bike, Erudin.  Is this about what you'd take for a touring load?  For the rando rides, did you just go with the handlebar bag, or did you add a rack pack or saddle bag?  Nice, considerate rear mudflap for pacelines, too.  Is that a Spanninga taillight on the rear fender?

How 'bout some gallery shots?  ;)

Best,

Dan.

oooh, that is a very dangerous photo, Erudin! If I were to buy another bike, that Audax Mk3 would be the one. Dreaming about the possibility, I'd been wondering if downtube shifters would be a practical option. And there they are!

My current idea is: if I can get my weight down from 180 to 150 pounds, I'll have earned a lighter bike.

Enjoy yours, many miles in good health!

Only about 1500 miles this year - RST, I stopped working at a desk 13 months ago and stopped the 40 mile commute!  Issues this year on the mechanical front were a free rebuild under warranty of my son dyno hub, it was about 5 years 6 months but SJS sent it to Germany and had it done under warranty, very grateful for that.
Also some rust from under the paint on my fork crown/fork blade area, this finally broke through after being noticed a few years back, bike is 6 years old, I will post separate about this issue as R Thorn commented on it.
cheers
Dave

4098.3 miles on my Thorn Audax Mk 3 bought in February 2009.  Mainly commuting but also occasional leisure rides and one holiday (Holland).
Agree with Erudin (above) – not the lightest bike I’ve ridden, but comfortable, ideal for my daily commuting through the lanes of South Oxfordshire, and occasional leisure rides.
The well shaped frame combined with intelligently selected components deliver a thoroughly well engineered machine, not cheap, not overpriced but all round very good value for money and moderately light weight whilst being robust enough for touring and occasional (careful) off-road use.

My, pwat, that is an outstanding Audax 3 you have!  What a lovely, balanced build, and it looks fast and capable just sitting there, eager to go.  You chose well on the color (red bikes are always fast!) and even the pannier piping matches.

'Can't think of a better road-based all-'rounder, and the phrase "modern classic" comes to mind.  Thanks for showing!

Best,

Dan.

2404 km on my Club Tour
1192 km on my Bianchi
4117 km on my TSR30

The TSR30 is seeing most use but I still enjoy using the Club Tour on the occasional Audax ride and for commuting.

Interesting to note the earlier comment about downtube shifters as there has been a bit of chat about that on the (Australian) Audax list lately.
Cheers,

pj

The failure of the brake/shifter on my 1996 Trek 520 got me started on the slippery slope that landed me on my new Thorn Nomad. That bike has a seven sprocket cluster. Apparently a replacement brake/shifter was unavailable. So I got downtube shifters installed. Simple and effective!

The gearing on that 520 is just much too high for me. I got started thinking about new cranks and chainrings. Then too the rims are rather beat up.

I think I will get the rims bent back straight and let our teenager try the 520. It can handle loaded panniers. He can push the taller gears. A little camping expedition would get him away from the video games. How to motivate him, that is still a puzzle!

I'll keep very quiet about my 1,200 miles on my RST.  But there again it's not very far to Waitrose for the shopping !
Lovely bike to ride though.

Don't record it exactly but it'd be around 4000 miles on my Raven Tour. That ties in with the 1700 miles I've done since I rebuilt the front (SON) wheel in August and made a note of the mileage.

I cycle commuted ~1,400 miles on my Thorn Raven Tour.  My resolution for this year is to increase that number to ~2K miles.
