Title: 6 speed Cassette for an old Elswick road bike
Post by: KatieB on September 24, 2010, 03:37:03 PM
Hi,

Would anyone be able to point me in the right direction, i need to replace the cassette on my old Elswick road bike(think is was made about 25 years ago). It's a 6 speed with 2 separate parts- one has the first 5 gears and the other part has the 6th gear. The 6th gear is the most knackered so if i could just get this part that would be fantastic otherwise i need a whole 6 speed cassette.
Bit of a novice so any advice would be welcomed.

Thanks

Katie

SJS have some 6 speed freewheels on their website, may be worth a look.

Unless you have a rare Uniglide (http://sheldonbrown.com/k7.html#uniglide) cassette, it is quite likely that you are looking for a 6sp freewheel. In the first case you can just replace a hyperglide body and fit a standard 7sp cassette. It is also remotely possible that you have a Uniglide-hyperglide compatible hub (I have two of the kind, both similar vintage to what you indicate, an RX100 and shimano 600) - in such case just get a 7sp cassette, preferably with smallest sprocket bigger than 11t.

In the latter case, head for any bike shop (the worse, the more likely you find it :) ).
