Briefly folks:

Does the Rohloff hub gear need a special type of BB?

Cheers.

But you do need a means of adjusting the tension in the chain on the Rohloff.

One way is with an eccentric bottom bracket holder as used by Thorn. That said the bottom bracket - the bit with an axle for cranks is a normal one.

If you are buying a new Rohloff hub on its own, get the version which is supplied with the chain tensioner which fits to the conventional derailleur hanger, and torque arm which braces against the left rear chainstay. Otherwise you will need to have the frame altered with new rear adjustable dropouts to allow for chain tensioning. As metioned by julk, Thorn use an eccentric bottom bracket shell for this purpose.

In addition to the solutions already mentioned, if your bike has long horizontal frame ends (rear dropouts), you can fit a Rohloff Speedhub in the version that comes with a long torque arm without having the frame altered; such long horizontal slots are common on bikes already fitted with hub gearboxes from Shimano, etc.

On the Rohloff site you will find an animated decision tree which lets you decide which version of the Speedhub suits your bike's dropouts and other arrangements.
