Title: How far did you pedal your Thorn in 2009?
Post by: Cake on January 04, 2010, 10:56:47 AM
Following on from the same question for 2008.......

This year for me and my RT it was 4600 give or take a few, I had less time than last year due to an Open University course (maths, statistics etc., my interest in numbers is not isolated to cycle computers for those who wonder about the point of them!)

It remains my most used bike (i have a £10 Sturmey hubbed hack for popping to the shops etc. and a yet-to-be-ridden road bike for audax) and i love it!

Happy riding 2010 to one and all!

I don't use a cycle computer but I once calculated my yearly mileage is about 4000 Miles.  About 3/4 of this is my commute to work,  I managed to cycle every (work) day through 2009 - even through the ice & snow  :o  (I don't have a car so no option really!)

I'm about 3000 miles a year.  Less touring in 2009 unfortunately but commuted every day.  A few miles also on my dahon mu when I needed to use the train.

I achieved my target a few days before Christmas: 3004 miles in the calendar year.
This was mostly racked up on my 12 mile/day commute, with a few weekend leisure rides thrown in.
This makes 2009 my most cycled year, 10% up on my previous best year.

Sadly, the icy weather, work commitments (requiring me to take the car) and a niggling sore throat after Christmas meant that I didn't manage to do any more miles in the last two weeks of the year.  Oh well, I guess that means I can target an even better year for 2010!

Happy New Year's cycling to one and all,

Simon.

I received my RT on 15th November and I've done 930km since.  My Cannondale Six13 has done a few hundred in that time as well but not as many as it should have....naughty RT keeps stealing my attention.

For the year I have no idea but it's usually 100-150km per week commuting on the RT and prior to that the Cannondale T1.
I did about 1300km on a Giant XTC Advanced MTB for the Tour de Timor http://garysandyperkins.blogspot.com/2009/09/first-day-is-over-but-why-do-i-feel.html (http://garysandyperkins.blogspot.com/2009/09/first-day-is-over-but-why-do-i-feel.html).  I bought it two weeks before the event and sold it the week after......my wife works in a bike shop and that makes her the best wife in the world :)
On the Six13 I usually do the Saturday group ride 80-100km and maybe a crit during the week but I haven't raced since the Tour de Timor but that is a whole other story.

Cheers

Updated today. I had my car MOT due. The car passed for 3rd Year in a row with no problem. Mileage for the year was 3074 miles! Get that.

I was going to go to the seaside today. But its snowed a great deal and my poor Mercedes is hidden under a pile of white stuff!
My wife is out clearing the front and rear paths to the house. She is very helpful.

Low mileage year for me, a total of around 6,000 miles of which just over half were on the Raven.
I diliberatly cut the distance down this year to concentrate on going faster, I've raised my average speed from 12 to 14mph.  The theory is that now I should be able to do the longer rides at the faster pace...time will tell ;)

Audax, where comfort is essential and speed = sleep.
I wanted to go faster on any bike not just my Raven, but after riding 10,000+ miles a year for 7 of the last 10 it just wasn't happening.  The expert advice was to reduce the distance, do some structured training and then build up the distances again, it's working so far.  Aim this year is to do 300km Audaxes with 6 hours to spare, rather than my usual 2 hours or less. Then I can sleep and continue to the longer distances.  I don't do well on sleep deprivation, though I know some people can handle it.

PH, I think the type and weight of the bike is very significant for doing 'fast' long distance Audax rides.

My main Audax road bike is a Seven Axiom Ti, Campag Record, 23-622 tyres etc. It weighs about 17lb (7.7kg) with mudguards! I always ride audaxes with the bare minimum of luggage even for over-nighters. I can manage 200's within 8 hours, 400's in 20hrs, 600's in 32hrs. On my local training rides (pretty flat) I consistently average 28-30 km/h.

OTOH, my Raven Nomad, flat bars, no racks, 50-559 tyres weighs 33lb (15kg). On the same training rides, I can barely manage 22-23km/h, for what feels like more effort! Clearly, my audax times would be a lot slower on the Nomad. (I don't think I'd want to ride a 300+ on a Nomad, though)!

I realise the Raven Tour isn't quite so heavy and cumbersome, but I hope you get my drift. (Your 14 mph average is the same as my Nomad average...).

BTW, my racing audax bike is as comfortable as my Nomad.

8,000 miles on my very comfortable RST. Now I have a set of studded tyres, Schwalbe Winters, I will be able to keep going through the ice season and hope to go further this year.

Indeed, I've recently treated myself to what should be a bit faster.  Planet X Ti Sportive ;D

Sweet. I agree, that should be a bit faster than the Thorn.  :D

Enjoy your fast audaxes!

Ive let a friend have it to build as it was too small for me. So it is getting some use as it should.

This seems to be catching - i have been pushing harder on my RT (average speed up from 12.5 m.p.h. to 13.9 m.p.h and a 7.5 hour (including stops) 101 mile ride) so that longer distances and audax rides will be easier and more enjoyable.

Easier because my new steed is a bit lighter as it is a Sabbath September with 105 triple etc. ;D

I haven't been able to have a setup ride on it yet due to the snow... >:(

But soon.....

So basically i have been using the RT as a training tool aswell as a superb workhorse!

This is my 'secret weapon' also. I'm 'training hard' all winter on the Nomad. Come the springtime, I'm going to be flying on my racing bikes like never before!

Thorn Raven Tour:

2006 - 1542 miles out of 1811 miles
2007 - 3121 miles out of 3203 miles
2008 - 4224 miles out of 5003 miles
2009 - 1404 miles out of 5573 miles

Basically I acquired more bikes in 2009.  My Raven Tour, for 3 years my "Bike for all Seasons" is now my bike for when it's really ugly out there.

My daily training is mostly on a 700c Single-Speed bike.
My Audax rides are done on my 700c Fratello or, if I want to be even quicker, my 700c Ribble.

When it's windy, raining and dark, and I need a bike that can ride rough-shod over potholes on rough country lanes, I reach for the Thorn.

It got me around an Audax Super Randonneur without any fuss but my Fratello should get me around with a bit more (some) sleep.

I don't use a computer on my RST, but typically 4500 miles per year, 99% of which is commuting.
