S+S stands for S+S machine which is a type of frame coupling which when installed by the frame builder allows you to break the frame into smaller parts for transport.
They are good but expensive...

In USA all airlines used to charge exhorbitant oversize fees for bicycles.  From what I have seen in the past, European airlines were much more bicycle friendly.

Now, Delta and American Airlines have waived their oversize fees in USA for bicycles, but I managed to pay for the couplers and the case in airline savings before they dropped their fees.

United has recently joined the choir, so the big 3 US-based airlines all will take most bike cases as a piece of luggage.

There's still a good argument for couplers in how portable the case is -- a 26x26x10 case fits in the trunk of most vehicles, bt a full-sized bike case does not.

Absolutely.  I may still use my S&S couplers and case for that reason alone.
